My employer droped its medical insurance for its employees. My question is, I am going to get an induvidual policy and wondering which company would be best if I wanted a policy that covered WLS. One option I have got and may not be any other options is the Texas Insurance risk Pool. Has anyone gotten WLS approved while on TIRP? I was ready all of the insurance remarks on this web site, but noticed most comments were more than 5 years old. Is there an updated website that may have these comments?
Hi James,
I do Bariatric insurance approvals for a living. I haven't seen a lot of individual plans but I will say I have never seen one cover bariatirc surgery. Just had one the other day from the Texas Insurance risk pool and it was an exclusion. I'm sorry to hear your employer dropped your insurance coverage. That is terrible. The other thing to consider, if you decide to pay cash for the surgery, most individual insurance policies will not accept someone who has had bariatric surgery in the past. Maybe it's time to look for a job with group insurance coverage???

In Nov I will be eligable to get on my wifes ins. which is BCBSOK through Braums. I only had 30 days to get signed up with them and her boss told her I couldnt sign up. The only reason I am getting an individual policy now is so there wont be any gaps for my coverage. My old insurance had a direct exclusion on surgery also. It looks like most insurance companies have gotten direct exclusion on all WLS these days.
