The Shakes...

Hi All

I am 18 months post op and I don't visit the boards as much as I used to.

But lately I've been having some problems that seem to keep getting worse.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

I've been having the shakes a lot lately. Shakey hands that progressively get to the point that I can't hold things or write.
Tonight, my heart felt like it was racing a bit after dinner.

Earlier when it happened, I downed a small carton of OJ hoping the sugar would help. It did get the hot flash to go away and the shakes weren't as bad...but I still wasn't able to drive. I also shorlty after that ate a hamburger pattie. So sugar nor protein make a difference. It takes the edge off, but not enough to make me comfortable again.

My husband is mad at me because I didn't tell him about it sooner but I'm already overwhelmed with other medical issues that I just can't handle anymore bad news.

I doubt it's related, but, I'm due to have a ovarian cyst removed with possible endo and I already had one removed in March. So, again, I can't handle anymore bad news and so I haven't gone to my doctor...but I figured y'all would be more familiar with everyone.

Any suggestions or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!!!

-Jessica

Hello, I looked up shaking and found this..  but still, if this has been going on for a while. GO see your Doctor!

Here is part of this artical:

"Severe hypoglycemia is a complication of gastric bypass surgery, and should be considered if the patient has symptoms such as confusion, lightheadedness, rapid heart rate, shaking, sweating, excessive hunger, bad headaches in the morning or bad nightmares," says Mary-Elizabeth Patti, M.D., Investigator in Joslin's Research Section on Cellular and Molecular Physiology and Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. "If these symptoms don't respond to simple changes in diet, such as restricting intake of simple carbohydrates, patients should be evaluated hormonally, quickly," she adds. Dr. Patti and Allison B. Goldfine, M.D., also an Investigator at Joslin and Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, were co-investigators of the study.

The study reported on three patients - a woman in her 20s, another in her 60s and a man in his 40s. All three lost significant amounts of weight through gastric bypass surgery, putting them in the normal Body Mass Index (BMI) range. Each, however, developed postprandial hypoglycemia (low blood glucose after meals) that failed to respond to dietary or medical intervention. As a result, all patients required removal of part or all of the pancreas. In all three cases, it was found that the insulin-producing islet cells in their pancreases had proliferated abnormally.

Whats your average daily caloric intake?  It may not be any particular macronutrient but if you're not getting enough total nutrition you could just be running low on steam and your body doesn't have enough fuel to function.

How are you - honestly - doing on your vitamins?  What do you take and how much?  There are several vitamin dificiencies that can cause your body to react in this way.  The scariest is a low B12 where permanent nerve damage takes place.

Are you still without work and insurance or can you get in to se your doctor and have some bloodwork done?  If not, maybe you can go to the emergency room next time it happens.  Parkland in Dallas and JPS in Fort Worth would have to take you...I'm not up on all of the details on how that works but others might have to se you in the case of a true emergency.  Maybe others know of clinics or something, too.

Sorry you're feeling bad.  I know this isn't fun.

I honestly don't know what my intake is.
I have a feeling I'm not eating enough.

As for vitamins, yeah, I've been bad about those since March. So in truth, I don't take them. But, I was taking them. I was taking prenatals, b12, iron, and something else I can't remember.

I do have insurance, but the copay has gone up to $40 I just went to the OB Monday, my son has an appt next week ($35) and I am still a temporary employee doing Cobra because this company hasn't hired me on yet (and not sure if they will).

So It's stressful too  :-(

Thanks for responding, hopefully something will work out...

Hi Jessica!
I am sorry to hear about your health! I had my surgery only 4 months ago but I have had the same thing since surgery. I had no prior health problems before surgery, now I have a few. This is one. My Nut and my surgeon said it is hypoglycemia. The funny thing is, I get it no matter what I eat. My surgeon said eat something with protein , carry protein bars or shakes, and when it happens to eat something high in protein- that has not helped at all. My nut said try something loaded with carbs that it is due to the lack of carbs. I get it really bad if I am in the hot sun or right after my period. I start to feel weak, I feel faint, my heart starts racing, I feel like I am over heating, my legs and arms get so weak I cannot walk or hold anything, and I just feel like I am going to pass out. The week after my period is really bad for these attacks and I found that the second I am in the sun, or I skip a meal (not intentionally)it is even worse. My nut wants me to go to my primary and get my blood sugar levels checked.

Not sure if this helped any, hopefully it does a little.

Now that you've said something, my period (the first in nearly 6 months) just ended last week....hmmm, wonder if that's why it's worse this week  :-(

I do need to go to the doctor...just wi**** wasn't so hard to get off of work -I'm a temporary employee and you try not to bring attention to yourself sometimes. Let alone the money...

Ughhh...

Thanks Michele!!!

I agree with Tawyna, if at all possible get your labs checked.

It does appear you may be experiencing some reactive hypoglycemia however that usually happens with high carbs and the crash in your insulin, which requires more carbs with protein to get it back up.  One of my best options IF this happens is peanut butter crackers.  I've been fortunate lately to not have it happen, I know if I eat sushi rolls I'm gonna crash, happens every time.

Are you eating lots of carbs (simple) and not allot of protein?  Try to level yourself off with more protein and fruit and veggies, eat 3 meals and 2-3 snacks per day.

Sorry to hear about the female issues I've dealt with them since I was 19 so I feel your pain.  It's better right now since the cryoblation but not fixed.  I had another cycle last month that suxed eggs.  I also have a cyst on the right side that my gyn is watching.

Dana,
I am eating all the wrong foods...I'm 18 months out, haven't lost weight since I was 9 months out (and I was eating right then) So I guess in some ways I've given up.
I haven't gained, but I just don't have the motivation anymore to try...

So like breakfast I've had those sausage, egg, cheese things from the frozen section of the grocery store. I've tried the eggs here at the cafe at work and I've gotten sick both times.
Lunch is chicken or chinese or burgers (minus the rice and buns). I have eaten french fries...

As for snacks, there's beef jerky, there's butterfingers (my new crave), cookies, protein bars, baked lays southwestern ranch chips....different things. Some days are better than others.

My biggest problem is that I don't eat enough, I don't drink enough, and vitamins are rare these days.
My mother has hypoglycemia, my father borders on diabetes. My family on both sides are diabetic.
Plus the stress and pain from the cysts just have me bogged down.

The happy things are my son, who just turned 4, and that I am now putting in more hours doing Kung Fu in hopes of upping my rank  :-)

So, hope that wasn't too much info.

Hugs!!
