Anyone here use Dr. Kuhn?
He did my RNY in December 2008. I have had no complications or problems whatsoever. My surgery and recovery were practically pain-free. I've lost 94 pounds in eight months.
I think Dr. Kuhn is an excellent surgeon. He always took plenty of time with me and never made me feel rushed. He comes across as very soft-spoken, knowledgeable, and kind.
Here are three things about Dr. Kuhn that I wish I had known when I was in your shoes.
(a) He never seemed to remember things about my other medical conditions from one visit to the next. I had to remind him every time. I did not find this shocking in a surgeon who is focused on the procedure he is (or will be) doing, but it is something you should know about him.
(b) He is very religious and politically conservative, and he is not afraid to encourage his patients to support his causes. He never did this in person, but he did it in his patient newsletter, asking patients to join his campaign against the teaching of evolution in public schools. I felt it was ethically wrong of him to put his patients, who are uniquely dependent on him, in such a position. Of course, that's just my personal opinion. My point is that I wish I had known it before I hired him as my surgeon. I still might have hired him, because he's good at what he does, but at least I would not have been as upset by the proselytizing as I was.
(c) I think with any WLS surgeon, you are not going to get 100% of the information and support you will need in your post-op journey. You will need books, websites, support groups, and perhaps most of all, the OH.com boards. In retrospect, Dr. Kuhn's people probably do as good a job as most surgeons' staffs do. Just don't expect them to educate you completely, as I did, because you will be disappointed!
Despite these caveats, I would recommend Dr. Kuhn to anyone, at least for RNY. By all indications he did a great job with my surgery. I think you will like him very much personally. Best of luck to you!

Debby,
From a technical stand point no complaints with Dr. Kuhn. Since I was self pay I did not have to go through the six month diet crapola nor did I have to see the shrink. If not for the sleep study and finding out I had sleep apnea I could have been done two weeks sooner.
Only fuss is with the expenses. Only reason I went with him was because the cardiologist I was using in Corsicana was Baylor based and Dr. Kuhn was his recommendation for a WLS surgeon. Hindsight being 20/20 I wish I had shopped out a better value. Not complaining about losing 160 lbs in a little over a year but if I could have saved some money going with my ex-wife's surgeon in Tyler I would have considered him instead of Dr. Kuhn. Was okay with what Dr. Kuhn charged me but Baylor Medical Ctr. broke it off in my ass! No doubt I covered somebody's indigent care, or "anchor baby" along with my surgery that morning.

Dr Kuhn is great... in every way... I have never had any of the experiences the others mentioned. so I don't feel it is common...

Thank you all so much! I live 3 hrs away from Dallas so I'm a little concerned about getting back quickly if I have a problem. Saw him yesterday, love him and his staff so far, scheduled for Sleeve for October 7. Am paying cash so also could have done in 2 weeks but he wants some past medical records that I need to get to him so the October date worked best for me. Now all the questions will begin. Mine will be at Vista so need to go check them out.
