So I am looking at my claims for my RNY and the total submitted was 70,000.00 my insurance only paid about 15,000.00. Is that normal or crazy or is that what they charge because I have insurance?

thats what they charge coz you have insurance. Its ridiculous. I self paid RNY 3 years ago and paid $20,500.
I have no idea why they charge that since they have a contract rate with the insurance companies that the company is only gonna pay XXX amount and its usually no where near even the 15K that yours paid.. usually less than 5.

Self pay RNY is a different price depending on where you go.

I know of a hand full of nice places in Houston that do them for around $25,000.00

With that said...
The insurance will always be charged more.

Places like to get as much money as possible; therefor they submit ridiculous prices through your insurance claim.

I saw a claim of mine once where the "Injection Fee" was $200.00 and a band aid was $45.00.

So wish I was joking!!

i paid 25,000 about 7 months ago for my surgery...i guess it depends on what area you have it done in but mine was in wichita falls. I couldnt imagine having to pay 70,000 never the less the insurance wanting to pay it..man health care is a rip off and we wonder why some companies dont want to pay for it...

I know 2 years ago when I looked into self pay it was 20 grand.   I think now Dr Garth charges 25-30 now for cash pay.   Insurance ALWAYS gets charged way more.   It is the hospitals way of getting money for the people who dont pay their medical bills.   But I dont want to go get all political on here.

My surgeons charge was $20,000 I think.  The hospital was over $70,000.  My insurance only paid $12,000 to the hospital and $2,000 to my surgeon.
