Question about (meal) Portions...

I am looking for help with my portions. I am currently almost 4 months out. Every month around my period, during my pms, I stall. I have PMDD (severe pms) and sometimes my pms is 2-3 weeks before my period. This last month it has been 3 weeks of PMS (for only 3 days of a period, blah) and during those 3 weeks I did not lose a pound. I am so frustrated. Another OH member suggested I post my food intake for feedback. I would greatly appreciate it. The reason I am concerened about my portions, on the other hand, is because sometimes I might not be able to eat my food in one sitting, so I eat a little then come back to it. I do not know if that is bad. For instance... I might make an egg for breakfast. I can eat a few bites and get full, so an hour later I might come back to eat and eat a little more. Is that bad?  What should I change to stop these darn stalls??

This is what I ate yesterday:

B: protein shake
water
S: one egg, scrambled with cheese
water
L: chicken salad with ff ranch
water
D: snap peas and roast (about an ounce of each)
water
S: handfull of baked lays chips
water
bed

Today:
b: protein shake
water
s: 1 egg scrambled with cheese
water
L: chicken salad w/ ff mayo
water
s: sliced peaches
water
D: carb free shepherds pie (meat, veggies, cheese, layered)

I am NO expert, but just based on my personal experience, it sounds like you are not getting enough calories.  For instance -- yesterday for dinner, you only ate an ounce of roast beef, and you are four months out?  I am wondering whether your body is in starvation mode and that is why it is giving up the pounds so grudgingly.  If you just cannot eat any more solid food, maybe you should add a protein shake or two.

What you really need to do is send your menus to your nutritionist and see what s/he says.  Call and ask for his/her e-mail address and send them.

Wow. Ok. That is not good news. I was afraid of overeating, not under eating. I will call my nut. I never would have thought I was not eating enough. I feel like I am eating all the time. Thank you for your input.

what MY PERSONAL experance has been is that when I find myself going back and nibbling on things I didn't finish I need to do a couple of thing
first  - mesure out what I am serving myself-check with the nut how much you should have right now
second - make sure I am eating the protien first, so when I go back for more bitet I am munching on veggie
third- if my messured serving is gone before I can eat anything else I must drink water (or tea, cl etc) 3 messured cups for me - you pick your number AND  I only snack on protien (as much as possible- pls do not kill someone and blame it on lack of chocolate during pms time) I TRY to have a protien shake as a snack at least once a day - one made with coffee or fruit to make it more of a treat (bu****ching cals and carbs while adding things)

the first thing is REALLY important to me at 3+ yrs out as I have learned that given time I CAN eat a normal sized meal - not talking supersized  but a resonable serving of protien, veggies and carbs

do please call or email the nut and ask for a menu with serving sizes - use that as a jumping off point for your calories and serving sizes -
Home is where the army allows me to live with my husband

I know what I need to do - I have to choose to take care of me or I choose to fail

Thanks Danni! That sounds like really good advice. I will try it. I am desperate. I am so upset that I am only going on 4 months and having this much trouble. Uggh. Maybe this stall is natural, but I feel like I am doing something wrong. I KEEP stalling. Everyone I see is moving right along w/o as many stalls. It is frustrating. I keep trying different things to see if this works or that works and so far nothing has really come through for me. My body is messed up. LOL.

If that is truly what you're eating, it's not enough.  One Ounce= a plastic Nyquil cup or about 2-3 "normal bites".  You don't list a quantity for for the chicken salad so if that's around an ounce too, that's really not enough.  Certainly could explain your stall.  Try to get 60 gm of protein a day.  I bet you never thought anyone would tell you to eat more, lol

Actually Stephanie, it was a problem I had before surgery too. Believe it or not. I was "skinny" in jr high and high school and I skipped breakfast and lunch for YEARS... then I met my husband after college. I was 22 (10 years ago) and that is when I started to pack on the pounds because I was pretty anorexic looking and my family was conerened. But I still skipped breakfast and lunch and usually ate just a bowl of corn for dinner. I was "dieting" , so I thought. BUT, the second my husband and I went to dinner (usually a fancy place), I gained a million pounds from that meal. Maybe that is what is happening? I don't know. Maybe my body is messed up? I am actually scared to eat too much and I know that forcing myself to eat breakfast and lunch is killing me! I get so scared when a meal time comes because I feel like I should not be eating so much. I keep thinking I am over eating. & yes, an ounces is right on or 2-3 bites. That is usually what I eat of something and I either get full or nauseas and I stop. I ate my chicken salad for lunch, and I litterally got less than 4 bites in before I felt horrible and stopped. Dinner- same thing. I actually changed my dinner menu because my husband wanted steak. I had about an ounce of really thin sliced steak, and about an ounce or two of steamed veggies. That was 2 hours ago and I am still feeling full. So can that be the source of my stall? How can I possibly up my calories?? This is really hard. LOL

Yes my dear you're NOT getting in enough.  I would recommend an appt with a nutritionist.  Continue logging your food and take it with you.  He/she can review it and offer suggestions.  My first suggestion would be protein drinks between meals.  Good luck.

I'm going to be opposite of what the others are saying in quantity.  At 4 months out I couldn't eat anymore than what you are eating.  1-2 oz max 3 times a day, that's when I HAD to add protein shakes (surgeon against it) because I wasn't getting in enough.

What about adding another shake with soy or low fat milk.  That'll get you close to 800 calories a day.
