OT: A Happy Household
Yeah, hubby works in downtown Houston so it is definitely difficult for him to make it to their matches but he tries as best he can. Now that they are going to have two matches a week a lot of times, then he'll just pick one. His boss is VERY family oriented so with all the extra time he puts in (he stays at wor****il 7 pm or later many, many, MANY nights!!!), she tells him to just head out early and go watch the girls on the days he CAN (if there is something pressing going on that has to be done he doesn't go of course...) which is great! He loves watching, I can't stand it. It makes me WAAAAY too nervous to watch them. My oldest loves it when I show up but it just flips me out to watch so I usually let Paul go instead!!!
I am SO HAPPY for your girls !!!!!
And I know exactly how they feel! I was on my high school tennis team and we only had one team and only 6 could make it - #1 singles, #2 singles, #1 doubles team and #2 doubles team.
My sophomore year I decided to try out for the team. We had a board with our names on it and if you beat the person above you, you switched places. At the cutoff date, the top 6 made the team. On the cutoff day I was sitting at position #7 so I challenged #6. We were so evenly matched that it drug out until it started to get dark. She finally wore down and I beat her and made the team.
That year, my doubles team lost every match we played - soooo discouraging. I threw my racket into the closet and decided to quit tennis. That lasted about 2 weeks. My neighbor (big tennis buff) talked me into buying a used Head racket she found for me with my babysitting money. I played every day and attacked my sport with a vengeance. When I came back for my junior year I was at the top of the bracket and made #1 singles! Nobody could believe I was the same "Sarah" who was so bad the year before LOL. Went on to win a lot of trophies after that.
CONGRATULATIONS to both of them !!!!

Yeah, not too many slots on the Varsity team, that's for sure. Every kid plays a doubles match with a partner, and one plays a mixed doubles, then after those matches are done, then all of them will have a singles match so everytime they play, each will play two full matches! My oldest definitely gets emotional when she plays but has learned to not cry at matches! She just gets pissy to be around afterwards, which is ok as most teenagers can be that way without losing! Now the younger one is very happy go lucky. So funny how COMPLETELY opposite they are. She's definitely the "dark horse" because she has battled weight for a while now, and has about 50 pounds to lose. All these girls she beat were skinny minnies and the oldest even overheard a few of them saying, "oh, I'll beat her as she'll get tired". Well, they were shocked at how well that girl runs the court. She plays a huuuuge mental game. She is definitely a strategist and uses that to her advantage to whittle away at the other person. She doesn't make me as nervous to watch as Heather does, but since they will both be playing at the same time, I think I may have hubby go watch Heather's and I'll stick to Viktoria's! OH...you mentioned the racquet - OMG, I am AMAZED at what difference a particular racquet makes. Both girls own very expensive racquets at $250 each but man oh man does that make a difference. We hated spending that much, but, when you figure that's really the only expense in the sport, it's not so bad!!!
I remember my first raquet had been my older sisters! it was an old wooden one that was warped! One X-mas we got new ones from day and my game went to pot! I had gotten so use to cmpensating for the warp factor it took me a long time to adjust to the new one!! I remember waht they cost then and we thought they were expensive then!
