Well, I've already got a bee in my bonnet about school supplies anyway. The girls always loved going out and picking the color of folders they wanted, what kind of pencils, markers, etc. but the last few years in elementary, the kids don't get to keep what you send for them. They go into a "classroom pot"!!! On Sarah's list, they ask for TWO boxes of colored pencils. I said, "uhm, what, are they planning on the kids eating them"? Granted, I know they might go through them, and, if that's the case, when she comes home and says she needs another orange or blue colored pencil, heaven only knows how many spares we have around the house. Even if she needs a new box come the first of the year, ok, fine, I'll send the second box in then, but what if my kid doesn't waste hers - so I have to bring a second box anyway??? Aaah, the real reason is this...Bobby, Sally, Ricky and Jen never brought in school supplies so by doing the "community classroom pot", the teacher makes sure everyone has stuff as they then divi out the supplies when needed. Sorry, but that sucks. If the school wants us all to donate extras here and there so they can make up donated kits for people, then fine just ask for extras, but don't make it seem like the supplies we bring in for our kids are kept there for our kids. Last year I was soooo irked because I had to go to a specific store to buy this red baseline writing paper that the first grade teachers wanted. We were asked to buy five tablets....at nearly $3.00 a piece. It was on the list so just had to bite the bullet and do it. Sarah hardly EVER brought that paper home to use for assignments, but instead, the teacher made PHOTOCOPIES of the lined paper and sent THAT home with the kids stapled with the instructional page of what their assignment was. What the heck!?!?! When I was a kid, you had your own supplies with your name on them stuffed into your desk and that was it. They were yours. If you got lucky enough to have your mom buy you a Trapper Keeper to put all your papers in, of course it was yours. Sarah picked out three plastic folders that was in the colors she wanted last year but when she brought home one of the folders marked "Homework Folder" and the other one marked "Communication Folder", neither of them were the ones she picked out. Two years ago she brought home some that had the name of some other kid (the mom must have thought by writing their kid's name on it, surely they'd get the ones they picked...) scribbled out with a Sharpie marker by the teacher. If each kid needs three folders for three different things, wouldn't it be easier for all the parents to write our kids' names on them then make three piles on his/her desk that we put one on each stack? Hmm, sounds easy but they make it too hard!!! (rolling my eyes). I star****ching for sales about mid to end July. Each store starts advertising a few things each week. Last week Office Depot had a two pack scissors for 25 cents and lined 3 x 5 cards (which they always need for vocabulary words of some kind) for 14 cents a package. This week, Office Max has a 24 pack of crayons for a PENNY. Granted, they are not Crayola brand, buuuut, if they are going into a big community pot, who cares!
The girls are doing GREAT in tennis so far. Looks like the both of them are going to make Varsity this year. I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed on that one. The freshman will for sure make Varsity as she has only lost one challenge/position match in the past couple weeks. The oldest one will probably come unglued if she doesn't make it. She plays a head game with herself thinking of course that she's the oldest so she should get to do everything first. I keep telling her she'd better WAKE THE HECK UP and smell the coffee because life just does NOT work that way! We should find out something definite this week!!!
