My levels are a little off, I am taking the recommended dose of vita d which is 2000,or that is what my doctor recommended. Now I am on prescription D for the next 2 months, already did that several months ago, but did not seem to help. what does everyone else take on the vita d? My iron is low, I have taken iron for almost 3yrs now, I guess I am not taking enough, I got the last batch from vitalady, so I am going back to bariatric advantage. I do not have my levels in front of me, but I am thinking that the nurse said to take slo- fe iron (something like that) What kind of iron does everyone take? Few others were off too, but that was the main thing? Please help if you can, Thanks Robin

I just recently started taking 6000 IU of D-3 a day.  I've read the normal recommendation for a non-altered anatomy is 5000 IU, so I figure I want to take at least that much.

My RNY surgeon started me on Tandem Plus which is a prescription Iron that so far seems to be doing good.  My ferritin went up 3 pts in a month and a half, so I'm anxious to see what the levels are like later this year.  It has 2 different types of iron in it that are absorbed at different points in the intestinal track, so it seems to be better.

Robin, first off you need to take D3 in DRY form.  Vitamin D is an oil based vitamin normally and with malabsorption of some fat you aren't absorbing the fat soluable one correctly.  It isn't uncommon to take up to 50,000 iu per day of D3 with deficiencies.

I'm currently taking 20,000 iu per day, I still haven't ordered the 50,000 iu which I need to order since my D has dropped again, not deficient but close.

What iron where you taking from vitalady and how much per day?  I changed from the Tender Iron to Poly-iron 150 because I was having to take more and more per day.  Be sure you take Vitamin C with the iron, and no caffiene, calcium, dairy or grains within 2 hours of taking your iron.

How low is "a little off"?

I know the requirements for Vit D. intake are different somewhat for RNYers and DSers ..  but if it helps any I take Vit. D-3, dry form (which is supposedly the most absorbable version) from Vita-Lady ..   She offers 5,000 IUs. and 50,000 IUs pills ..  I was taking 5,000 a day and my level was still below normal range, so I doubled it and the next check showed it was still below normal range ..     I then went to the 50,000 pills and am taking two of those a day (100,000 IUs, total) and can't wait to see what my upcoming check shows my level at now.   I have heard many DSers take the 50K IUs x2 a day for about 30 days, and that this will raise the level enough that they can back off then to 1 50K pill a day (or even 2x or 3x a week) and it will stay in normal range ..

  Good luck ..   !

My vit D was 49 when I had my last blood counts done. Is range good or should I be concerned? Normal is 20-100.

Thanks Donna
