I am seeking advice on selecting a revision Dr in Dallas, & the private hospitals they use . I am considering Dr. Barker or Dr Alexander...would like opinions on both. I want someone that is very skilled...as I am sure there is scar tissue.

I have a old VGB from 1999, am considering DS, gastric bypass...mainly I am seeking advise on bed side manner, support, and negative and positives...if you prefer to email then post..either is fine. I appreciate all information.

Thanks !
Loren

Loren - I don't have information on those two docs, but I was also a revision from VBG to RNY.  I had the VBG done in 1992 and was revised to RNY in Mar 07.  My surgeon is Dr. Harry Meyers.  He works out of both Medical City Dallas and Presby Plano.

I was very impressed with his skill and care and would highly recommend him if you are interested in the RNY.  When I had my surgery nearly half of his practice was revisions, so he's got a lot of experience working with difficult cases.

I'm not 100% sure of this, but I believe the person you would want to check out for the DS would be Dr. Daryl Stewart in Denton.  I'm not sure if he does revisions, but I have heard nothing but good about him with the DS.  The DS is a more complicated surgery and a revision to DS is even more so, so please do lots of research to find someone who has a great deal of experience.

Feel free to PM me if you want more information.  I'm happy to share my story and a lot of it is on my profile.  Revising my surgery was the best thing I've ever done for my health and I wouldn't change it for the world.

Good Luck!

Debbi

Hi Loren,

I had a revision from a LapBand to RNY in Aug 08.  My surgeon was done by Dr. Joseph Kuhn at Baylor Dallas.  I believe he also works out of Medical City Dallas.  I highly recommend Dr. Kuhn.  He is very experienced, and the surgery has been very successful.  Because he is a very popular surgeon, I ended up staying in the hospital a little longer than I wanted to, but other than that and the typical issues associated with the surgery, it has been a very positive experience.

While doing your search, check with Dr. Manuel Castro.  He did my son's surgery in March.  If I had known about him before mine, he would have done mine as well!  He is experienced with revisions (just did a friend of mine's).  His website is www.nbsurgical.com

Good luck!

Both are very good on revisions, as are Nick Nickerson and Daryl Stewart in Denton ..  Stewart is the only experienced DS surgeon doing them regularly in the N. Tex. area, btw .. His $ rates are great, too ..

I've found that just emailing Alexander and Stewart through their websites though sometimes doesn't result in a response (at least in my case), so you may want to try calling their respective offices directly instead to set up for a first consultation ..

Frank talk about the DS / "All I ever wanted to be was thin, like that Rolling Stones dude ... "

I second Brooke's opinion. Dr Manuel Castro did my re-vision
from VBG to RNY in June 08. He is a wonderful surgeon
and  he is so kind and will explain as many times as you
need him too.  I had my surgery at Dallas Methodist. Shortly
after the hospital opened a new wing for bariatric(I believe).
I don't believe in staying long in the hospital but the care
was great. Check out Dr. Castro - I am so glad he was
the one that did my surgery and after care.

I STRONLY recommend Dr. Alexander. He did my original bypass surgery and he's doing my revision. My original surgery took me from 484 down to 240 in less than 16 months which was in 2002.  I've since managed to gain about 40 lbs give or take a few.  I visited his office the last week of June, Ann submitted my approval request on July 14, and I had my approval letter in the mail on July 17th!  I could have had my surgery a week later however, I had two weeks of travel scheduled for work so I'm in Ohio from Aug 9th - Aug 14th and my surgery is Aug 19th.

Dr. A is a great doctor and in my opinion his bedside manner is excellent. He's very supportive and understanding. I hesitated going back to him after gaining some weight but never once did he make me feel bad about it. I did contact Dr. Stewart's office and after sending over my Operative report from my initial surgery, his nurse "suggested" I go back to Alexander although I was interested in a DS.

I hope this helps.  Be blessed all.

Dr Barker did my revision from lapband to lap RNY.  I reached goal in less than one year.  He is one of the most experienced revision surgeons in the metroplex which is the reason I chose him.  His office staff is great but VERY busy.  Appointments take a long time-often 2-3 hour wait time.  But for me, to have the best was worth the wait.  All the details of my experience are on my profile if you want to take a look.  Also Dr Barker and I recently filmed a piece that will be aired August 19th on NBC channel 5 in dallas during the 10 PM news if you want to see his personality.
