hair loss???????

I went to get my hair cut yesterday and I was told my hair was too thin to get the cut I wanted!!!  I almost fell out of my chair when he said it.   I know it's true but up until now I have always had very thick hair!!!!  They would always have to thin my hair when I went in.  But to hear someone confirm what I was in denial about.... UGH!!!!!

For the past month or so I have been trying to get in at least 100grams of protein because I was getting ready for my plastics and a few weeks ago I went to Whole Foods and found some biotin lozenges.  So I am hoping this will help...

My question is...  for those who had hair loss after WLS how long was it before you noticed your hair was back to normal????

I lost over 50% of mine between months 4-8.  At 2 years out mine is about 80% of it's pre-surgery thickness.  I have always been faithful about my protein but never took Biotin cuz I can't find any "studies" in the literature to support it.  (Neither cn my doctor~he says it won't hurt but probably won't help either).  From what I've seen, people with lighter colored hair tend to have more permanent hair loss.  Most people with dark hair, retain most of theirs.

Hey Paige,

I have always had thin hair so you can imagine how I felt when it started falling out.  I was sure I was going to go bald.  I started taking Biotin twice a day, and even though there are no studies to say it works, I swear by it and my hair is not falling out anymore.  In fact I am almost at 2 years and I have not lost any in the last year.  You should give the Biotin a chance and see what happens.  Good luck.  Hugs.  Michelle

Paige...mine didn't start coming out until I was 7-8 months out from WLS... got better after that, but is still much thinner today than pre-WLS.  It seems worse around the front.  I can see a little scalp and never could before!  I get in plenty of protein.  From all the things I've read about Biotin, it's never been proven to actually help, but you never know...maybe it will help you.

Also, after any type of anesthesia, some people lose hair, but it takes a month or two.  I tried to deny hair loss for a while, but it's there!

I'll be 2 years in November and my hair is still thinner than it used to be, but my hair was extra thick so I'd actually say mine is normal now.  Strange?  I know!  Anyway, I take biotin and get lots of protein, but I'm not seeing any dramatic regrowth.  Perhaps it's helping though cause some peep have lots more loss than I did.  Sorry.  Still not what you wanted to hear I'm sure.

Paige, I didn't lose significant amounts of hair but my loss lasted about 3 months.  When I had my plastics I did lose some hair again *sigh* and in fact the past month I've noticed lots of loss.  I'm also pushing the protein, one of the reasons I added my shakes back (along with regaining control).

Have you had your labs drawn lately?  If not, and it's possible have them ran and find out what your thyroid numbers are, thyroid issues will make you lose lots of hair.

Paige....Ditto what everyone else has said.    I am almost 4 yrs post op.   My hair fell out for about 3 months.   That was along time ago.   I think my hair is back to pre op condition but to be honest.....I think my sides are thinner than before.   Not totally sure though.   PS can make the hair start falling out again.    Up your protein and take Vitamin C's also.   That will aid with healing and the hair.   Good luck and you look WONDERFUL !!!
