I am only 3 months out as of today. I keep reading posts where people insist they are never hungry even a year or two or three after surgery. How come I am 3 months out and ALWAYS hungry? & even though I am always hungry and wanting to eat, I can only eat a few bites and I still am not getting enough calories in. I get about 400-500 a day and that is UP since last month where I could only get in about 200/300 a day. My surgeon wants me to have 800 a day. I am trying so hard and I am always hungry. How can I be so hungry? All I want to do is eat. I eat 3/4 bites and I am done. I walk away and an hour later I am eating AGAIN (or munching on the same food that I could not finish earlier). For instance, I might make a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast. I buy the HEB pomegrante flaxseed healthy choice stuff and it is really thick. I eat a few bites and then I am so full. An hour later I go back to it and eat more of it. An hour after that I am eating it again and finally finishing it. Then an hour later it is lunch and I do the same thing all day long. I still get my water in and I drink at least 2 protein shakes a day. Is it normal to be this hungry all the time?  I am afraid that I will eventually gain all my weight back because I will be used to eating all the time! 

Oh, and to note, I have to eat 6 small meals a day according to my dr because I developed hypoglycemia and I get really bad attacks if I do not eat. I don't know if has anything to do with my hunger or not, but I feel I have to eat that much or I will die of hunger. LOL

No you aren't alone.  I am hungry often, but it seems to be less and less often.  I find if my belly is full of water, which it usually is, I am not hungry because I feel full.   And I do eat that often per day, too...well maybe 5 times, but I eat between 150 - 200 calories per meal.  If you are doing 2 protein shakes, you are probably getting more calories than you are stating, I think.  My protein supplements have about 100 - 140 calories per serving so you have to be getting more than that.  I might suggest you eat a more dense protein though, instead of oatmeal.  Even the healthy stuff doesn't have as much as things like cottage cheese or eggs.  Is there are reason you don't eat things like meat, fish or eggs?  You didn't mention you had problems with these types of foods or that you were vegeterian, so I'm curious.

I cannot handle meat or eggs yet. I do not do fish- I do not like it. Everytime I eat meat or eggs, no matter how I prepare it or blend it, I get sick. Pasta and carbs are a no go too. I am very limited. I live off of soups and salads because it is about all I can handle. The little bit of chicken I get in is because I get the chicken in a can with water, and it is 13g of protein, and I mix it was FF mayo and shred it and eat it like that (no bread or anything else). Eggs make me throw up anyway or anyhow... The soups are easy for me, I get soup and drain the broth and eat it that way (usually italian wedding or chicken noodle). Salad is usually greens with avacado and tomato.

When I see what you're eating, it doesn't surprise me at all that you're always hungry. The oatmeal and the soups you mentioned have very little protein and high carbs. The chicken noodle soup is mostly noodles and a tiny bit of chicken. The "white carbs" of the noodles raise your blood sugar, then shortly after, you "crash"---your blood sugar gets too low and you have to eat again. That's where the hunger comes in. If  you were eating more protein, you wouldn't have the roller-coaster blood sugars (not surprised about the hypoglycemia, either). If you can't do most meats, try other high-protein things like low-sugar yogurt, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, etc. If you can eat chicken, try it prepared other ways besides canned.  Try adding unflavored protein powder to your oatmeal. Add some protein to your salad. If you were eating less carbs and more protein, I think you would be surprised at how much better you would feel.

THANK YOU! Where can I get unflavored protein powder? Any other suggestions on what I can eat? I think that is my first biggest problem. I never know what to eat. I sit and look in my pantry and debate, then I go to the fridge, and back and forth. I try planning meals but that never works. I try to eat more meats for protein, but the canned chicken is about all I can handle.

My favorite unflavored protein powder is Unjury. It's available online at unjury.com---I don't think it's available in stores. You can add it to lots of different things---just be sure whatever you add it to isn't over 130 degrees or it can clump up.

You are really limited if you can't eat meats. Have you been to your surgeon's office and discussed this?

Yes. My surgeon told me I have a sensitive pouch. Thats it. They are the ones that said I should try oatmeal or gritts for breakfast since I can handle carbs and I can't handle eggs. I had a really hard time in the begining....I couldn't hold down anything. The first 2 months all I did was get sick after everything I ate or drank, even water. That is why I tend to stick to soup because it is something I can handle.
This is the list of things I cannot handle: 
Fruit
Pasta (unless it is from soup and I can ma****)
bread
meat
eggs
yogurt (dairy in general I think, b/c I can't do milk either)
fish (well, I just don't eat fish)


Things I can handle: 
Soup
chicken in a can
lettuce
avacado
sf jello pudding
some cheese
thinly sliced lunch meat in small amounts

So you can have several varieties of the lowfat deli meats on hand, and add them to your salads, along with some lowfat (like 2%) cheese. The soups are just not that great in terms of protein.  How about other veggies besides lettuce? Chicken and veggies, or deli meats and veggies would work. You're limiting yourself if you won't even try fish. Some are not that "fishy"-tasting.

Concentrate on getting more protein from food and your hunger should improve.

Connie gave you some excellent information and I agree; the carbs will make you feel hunger quicker than good ole protein.  Maybe try some of these for extra protein:

1)  tuna salad (tuna, FF mayo, boiled egg).  I COULDN'T do eggs anyway except in tuna or chicken salad the first year they hurt me badly.
2)  chicken salad
3)  deli meat and cheese rollups
4)  turkey pepperoni (it's delicious microwaved until crisp) with cheese cubes
5)  Refried Beans with cheese
6)  cottage cheese, yogurt, s/f pudding
7)  veggies steamed until soft (I actually crave veggies and have since surgery) with a small amount of lean beef (ground meat usually works well, if needed add a tiny bit of ketchup when you eat it to make it moist to chew and swallow).

Any Whey has a "tasteless protein" although I do find a slight taste to it, it really is good.  You can buy this at GNC or Vitamin Shoppe.

And as Connie said add protein to your oatmeal, I really like Vanilla protein in oatmeal for breakfast.
