Ferritin ????
With Ferritin levels that low, do NOT wait until you need transfusions, start taking supps NOW .. IMHO, the best are Vitalady's Tender Iron chewables .. I chew 6 in the a.m. w. a Vit. C chewable, and repeat at night .. Also, try to space it at least 2 hours away from any calcium supps you take ..
Also, I would have my Transferrin level also checked now, which will show the rate at which your body is moving iron out of its (depleted) stores and into your bloodstream as needed ..
Good lucik, and please keep us posted on your progress ..

You're not alone in this quest - I have to get my blood drawn next Friday to see where I'm at as well... A month ago I went to the OB for the annual check up and my blood stick showed a 9 (normal range is 12.9). I stopped into the surgeon's office and they gave me a form recommending what to eat, what not to eat, etc. This week, I went to Carter Blood Care to attempt to donate and my stick was a 11.3; they couldn't take my blood with iron so low.
So, I'm on the search 2 years out and meeting with the doctor in about 2 weeks to see where all my levels are at too. Good luck with yours!

Donna, you must be exhausted.....MOST doctors will push for infusions at a 5. I suggest you call your doctor if you don't hear from him today and ask about seeing a hemotologist.
You may be able to bring your ferritin up with iron pills but it won't be a quick process, IF at all possible and your insurance pays definitely go the infusion route. You'll feel better much sooner.
I do recommend Tender Iron or the Poly-Iron that vitalady sells. I can't vouch for the bariatric advantage since I've never used them but many continue to do well this their iron.
