Got my lab results back and my Ferritin was a 5. Can anyone tell me when I should be taking iron. I'm almost 6 yrs out and this is the 1st time that any of my counts have been low. I have never taken an iron pill. Any help would be great!

According to my doctor and everything I've read, you should take iron always after RNY.  You should also take calcium, B-12, and heavy duty multi.  I would ask your doctor to make sure that you don't have any problems taking iron, and then start.  Good luck.

My labs have always came back good until this time. My dr is suppose to call me. My hubby just had surgery 2 wks ago and Dr Robert Davis put him on iron. I take the Bariactic vitamins. My B12 has always been high. It was 948. I'm thinking that I need to take the iron. Normal Ferritin is10-232 ng/ml and mine is at 5. Thanks for the reply.

Amy.....my doctor ( and trust me they ALL tell you something different ) told me that I did NOT need iron.   I am finished with menopause and no longer menstrate.    So I was told I didn't need iron.    That is not to say that I may NEVER need it.   I am almost 4 yrs post op RNY and my bloodwork has always been perfect.   Just wanted you to know that all doctors do not tell you to take iron after RNY.

Take your iron at least 2 hours before or after calcium or dairy products.  Take it with vitamin C.

DO NOT eat or drink any of the following within 2 hours of taking iron: dairy, eggs, fiber, tea, coffee, red wine, grapes, or spinach.  They each contain substances that bind with the iron.  The iron will then be excreted in the feces.

Thanks for the reply. Hopefully I will hear from my dr tomorrow. I think that I should be taking an iron tablet.

Donna.....I don't take iron either and I am almost 4 yrs post op and have never had any problems with my labs either.    I would go ahead and take the iron.   Bariatric Advantage has some wonderful tasting iron.   You might want to try theirs.    Good luck to you !!!

Donna,

What was your iron on your last lab?

I hope you can bring it up w/o transfusions.  I worked hard to get mine from the mid 50's (pre-op) to the mid 70's (6 months) only to have it drop back to the mid 50's at one year.  I know that is a long way from your 5, but mine dropped 20 points in just 6 months and I was taking iron several times a week.  To get it it to the mid-70's I was taking it every day and having constipation problems.  I always took my iron with chewable C and never close to my calcium or protein shakes.

Good luck,
Sarah

My labs last year my Ferritin was 20 so it has dropped quite a bit. The drs have always said that it was fine. I have been staying real cold more than normal with WLS. Gonna try and get in touch with my dr again tomorrow. Thanks for the in put. This is all new for me even though I'm 6 yrs out. My labs have been good until now and I'm very faithful with my vits.

Well, based on what I have seen with my iron in 6 months, I would have been panicked to see mine at 20 even though the bottom of the normal range is 10.  And yet, your doctor wasn't concerned so of course you would not be.

I do know that chewing 5 Tender Irons nearly every day with vit C for 6 months increased my iron by 20, so I know you can bring yours back up, too and you will probably feel better also.
