Peanut Butter Protein Balls (my recipe)

I've made my own variation of these and sent some with Danni who asked me to post the recipe on here.  I don't measure when I cook so my measurements are not exact and you may need to play with it some to get it just right.

1 cup peanut butter (creamy, I tried crunchy and they don't do as well)
1/4 cup your favorite syrup (flavored coffee syrup or SF maple syrup)
1/3 cup chopped almonds (you may use whatever nuts you have and I use my pampered chef chopper to get them just right)
1 scoop protein powder (if this makes the dough too dry where nothing will stick to it then add a bit more syrup)
stir all ingredients together, roll into small balls and coat in old fashion oats.
I have also mixed some finely chopped nuts with the oats and rolled these in them.
Then place in baggie and store in the freezer (I think for me this is the best place to keep them, the peanut butter could make them oily if they are left out)

Now so far the best flavors I've found are Kahlua syrup and vanilla protein powder, after wards they almost taste like a macaroon.

But I also used regular SF maple syrup and chocolate protein powder and these are good too.  Sorry I haven't broke down how much protein are in these, but it is pretty high and I'm certain would vary depending on your protein powder.

I used to make these early out from surgery for a good protein snack.  I need to make some more now.  I did semi-dump sometimes from them...there's something about the combination of protein powder and peanut butter that does that to me.  My worst and first dumping was an "Elvis" shake that had peanut butter , a little milk, protein powder and I forget what else, but did it 2 times and it made me sick as a dog.

I think I'll make some.  Thanks for the reminder about these good snacks!

I'm glad you made this comment.  Today I made a protein powder and peanutbutter ice cream that made me ill.  I couldn't figure out why when I eat the ingredients separately.  I'll bet it was the combination.

Amy, after I dumped on this, I googled it and apparently combining protein, milk and peanut butter, it can make you sick.  I'm going to try these protein balls again.  I bet this far out ( 3 1/2 years) it won't make me sick...early on it may have been a bad combination for me.  Everybody's body reacts differently, so you never know!

These sound good!

The worst dumping episode I ever had was on a couple of Tablespoons of plain peanut butter, but I was early out.  I tried some a few weeks ago and did fine, so I think I will try these.

I have some SF English Toffee syrup I got from World Market and some IDS vanilla cinnamon protein powder so I may try that combo.  I don't like almonds, so I think I will crush some peanuts.

I created a "meal" in Daily Plate for the whole recipe and came up with 1999 calories, 94 g carbs, 161 g fat and 111 g protein.  If the recipe made 2 dozen protein balls, then each would have 83 cal, 4 g carbs, 7 g fat and 5 g protein.

I know the peanut butter and almonds are a bit high in fat, so I limit my consumption of these to 2 or 3 at the most per serving.  but I've never dumped from nuts or milk (knock on wood)...
Everyone is different and maybe by playing with it a bit you can make it work for your needs and tastes..
Good Luck..
