Urgent Prayers Needed for My VBG Buds Judy & Don
I don't know how many know of my good friends in Bandera, Don & Judy Abrams. I have mentioned before how they both had VBG in Rowlett back in 2002, and lost a lot of weight between them, despite some bad complications of their surgeries.
I also mentioned how Judy decided 3 weeks ago she would finally undergo a brain surgery procedure to enlarge the opening where the spinal cord passes up through the base of the skull into her brain stem. It was for a rare, congenital condition, that did not cause her any problems until she was almost 50. The surgery at Methodist seemed to go very well, and she was discharged to go home to recover (poor Don himself is still recovering from hip replacement surgery, btw). Apparently things were O.K. for about a week or so, and then yesterday I - and many of their family friends - get this email from her neice:

Please pray with me. Aunt Judy has been in ICU for about a week and a half with complications from her surgery (fluid not draining from her head, and too dangerous at this point for a shunt). She is staying strong, and fighting, and her faith is in God.

I find out by calling Don tonight that Judy does NOT seem to be in good shape at this point. No idea why they never put a shunt in before now. She apparently developed some brain swelling at the time she was readmitted, and they are waiting for it to "resolve" before they will try to shunt off the pressure buildup. In the meantime, they are keeping her doped up with steroid painkillers. Don said she can get up to head to the restroom in her hospital room, but feels the pressure in her head and gets dizzy. He is obviously and understandably very frustrated and upset at what is going on.
So many unanswered questions right now, but at this time we are all just asking for prayers that Judy will pull through this. Thanks everyone.

Paul.....Don and Judy BOTH will be in my prayers. I am so sorry that your dear friends are going through this. It is so hard at times to understand WHY GOD allows things like this to happen to us. I truely believe in my heart that it is to make us a stronger person in our faith. Anyway prayers going out for them both. Please keep us updated on both their conditions.

I had missed the original post here about Judy and went back to find it. I would assume she had Arnold Chiari Malformation. Do you know? I had that too and did not have any problems until I was in my early 20's. Had a car accident that aggravated it and they did the same procedure (sounds like it anyway) to enlarge the opening. Didn't know how lucky I was to come through fine. Prayers up for Judy....
Yes, July .. Judy's ACM didn't cause her any problems until the last few years, and she said it was starting to affect her personality and ability to concentrate (we noticed it too! ), so she finally decided she needed to go ahead and have the corrective surgery done now.
The surgery seemed to go well initially, but her problems started happening a couple weeks later at home ..
