Just curious as to what others had to lose before surgery, excluding a week or 2 week preop diet.

Robin, my surgeon required a 20 lb weight loss for me.  The main objective is to shrink the liver and make the surgery easier to perform AND to see compliance from the patient that makes the post-op lifestyle easier.

Hi Robin....you must be a newbie.   I have not seen you post here before ( that is unless I just missed it ).    I am almost 4 yrs post op RNY....I was told that I had to loose at least 20 lbs. for my surgeon to not have to do open RNY on me.    I lost 40 pre op.

Hugs and blessings ~~~ Vivian

I lost absolutely nothing during my six month required diet.  I did lose around 20 during the 2-week pre-op liquid diet.

I wasn't required to lose anything. My insurance required a 6 month diet and I gained 12 pounds because in the amount of insulin that I was required to take.  I only had to do 1 week of liquids and I might have lost 5 pounds then I don't really know.  I use the last weight from my surgeons office right before surgery for my total weight loss.

ARe you worried you might not lose or has your doctor given you and amount you aren't sure you can do?

yes he said that I would have to lose 40 lbs before he would even consider doing surgery because "people like me", I guess meaning size do not do as well and that he has not done surgery on someone with my BMI and that I need to get down to here he has done surgery on a certain BMI.  Make since?   I did not feel like an individual in his officem he kept refering to "people like me".  So was jusr curious of other Drs and their weight loss theories.  I do understand doing the 2 week pre op before surgery but not the additional 40 lbs before starting the 2 week pre op.
