OT-July BBQ "Flood" damages
Stephanie....I use to have State Farm insurance and changed many years ago to Farmers. I think I would call the insurance adjuster that you have and ask if you can lay the floor yourself ( that is if you want to do it ). Since I just delt with a insurance claim for flooding on my home...they paid us to have the tile floors in my house cleaned.....we kept the money since we were upgrading our flooring to Italian Porcelian tiles throught out my house and they said nothing. We still ended up paying alot more out of pocket but we got what we wanted. I have heard of people replacing their own roofs on their homes themselves so I can't imagine why it would be different if you wanted to put your own floors in. It wouldn't hurt anything to inquire into that.....I doubt that they can "make" you hire a contractor. I know they sent a carpet company out to my home...even though we didn't put carpet in....they said it was what they HAD to do in order to process the claim. Good luck to you and hope that everything works out well for you guys. Had a great time at your BBQ but I sure felt so badly for you when the water started flowing !!!!

State Farm already gave me the option of hiring someone ourselves or doing the work ourselves. But at our age and with our KNEES, we will never do flooring again. I chose to use their approved contractors and will see what comes of it.

Don't blame you at all with the knees being bad. Good luck Steph.....trust me work is NOT cheap these days. I paid as much for my flooring to be installed as I did for the flooring and all it took to compelete the job to get it put down.....and I did NOT use one of their approved people. They were far too expensive for me. Especially since we paid 5 x's more what the insurance co. gave us.

Ok, as a member of the 50 and over crowd I am going to throw in my opinion of tile vs vinyl.
I had a house built in 1996 and was able to get an upgrade to tile pretty cheap because we hadn't signed the contract with the builder yet LOL I always loved the look of tile and it was gorgeous.
However, it is hard as hell on your feet after standing in your kitchen for any length of time. Vinyl may not look as good, but it sure is more comfortable to walk on and stand. The tile also chipped when something very hard fell on it (like a pickle jar) and the said pickle jar ALWAYS broke and shattered where on tile it might bounce. I gave up the house when I gave up the ex (no regrets!)
I like to play with my "dream house" plans on my computer for the house I hope to build in Arkansas and even though the tile looks better in the 3D renderings, when it comes to actually building it I think I will go with vinyl. They have some that looks a LOT better than the old linoleum and I want comfort over looks in my "golden years"

Steph,
We had damage and had to go through an insurance company to replace our floors and what we did was let the insurance company pay the labor and materials then we just upgraded the materials with the contractor and paid the difference... I think we came out paying a total of 278.00 for tile to be installed instead of the old vinyl... Might be worth looking into... U should be notified of who the contractor is and usually they would prefer to lay tile... Hope it all turns out...
