Hair Loss

I have read on the forums that many people experience hair loss. I am 5 months out and down 80 pounds from gastric bypass and have started to loose my hair. Can anyone tell me how long this last or if there is anything I can do to stop it? I have just received a layoff notice for Mid-September and really do not want to look for a job if most of my hair is gone.

Most people have some degree of hair loss generally sometime between months 3-9 post op.  My hair fell out from months 3-7.  I took Biotin and used Nioxin for my shampoo.  I think it helped, but who knows.  I have a lot of hair so it was not noticeable to anyone but me.  It started growing back around month 8.  Now I have a lot of whispy pieces that will eventually be as long as the rest of my hair (I'm now 10 months out).

thanks for the info. What is Biotin? I know my protein is low because I have not found a protein drink that I like. Can you recommend a good one. I have found that they are either too grainey or too sweet. I have started eating the protein bars but I have to break them in half because they contain so much sugar and I do not want to go through the dumping syndrome.

That is about the time I started losing mine.  I started taking Biotin and it really seemed to help.  Keep track of your protien and make sure you are getting enough.  I usually take the protien shots in apricot juice because I haven't really found a protien shake I like.  It will eventally stop but the bioltin did seem to help!

I use the WheyShot Protein Dring with 49 grams of protien.  I drink about 1/2 cup of apricot juice in the morning with have of the shot of protien and then in the afternoon I drink the rest.  I get them at the vitimin shop because they have the 49 grams not the 42 or 26.

Most common time for hair loss seems to be 4-8 months post-op.  Mine fell out in clumps.  I swore I was gonna be bald.  But guess what?  It all started coming back in and at 2 years out, my hair is fine.  If you go to my profile, you'll see how thin my hair was at 4 months out.  I took nothing to help it.  I couldn't find any conclusive studies that proved it really helped.  Just make sure you get all your protein in everyday and take those vitamins.

Thanks Stephanie. Can you tell me if there are any OH members that are close to Lindale which is 11 miles north of Tyler? I see you are in Rowlette which is closer to Dallas than Lindale. I am taking the vitamins, but have to admit I cannot find a protein I like.

I would suggest you post asking if anyone is from East Texas/Tyler area and see if you get any hits.

If I were you, I'd order some protein from www.unjury.com.  I loved their chocolate, unflavored and vanilla.  A lot of people that don't live in metropolitan areas order from them.  GNC stores also have good protein powders (max protein or optimum nutrition are two very popular brands).  The good thing about GNC is they will let you return it for store credit if you don't like it.

I don't know if anyone else has tried these but, I have started using the EAS AdvantEDGE carb control protein drinks.. I get mine usually at walmart but have found them at Albertson's too so they probably have them at other stores. These have 17 grams of protein but they have some if you don't dump that have  20 and then some that have 30or 40 grams of protein. I have to say that I love these protein drinks more than any I have tried.. Well except for the Acheveones but those are too expensive and too big of a deal to have to order when I can go right down to the store and buy these. They have chocolate, rich dark chocolate( my favorite) tastes like chocolate milk)  strawberry and vanilla.
They are all good and I don't find that they have an after taste like some I have tried.
Hope you find one that you like.
