Low Blood Sugar

A juice box should fix you up quick.  Keep those handy too both for you and the kids.  Candy takes longer to digest.  Orange or apple juice are usually fastest.

How often do you check your glucose levels?  My mother has this problem and sometimes it has nothing to do with what she eats.  She is elderly and has been diabetic for a very long time.  At this point her doctor calls her a brittle diabetic.  As a result when she visits me I check her glucose level several times a day in order to catch a droping level before it is too low.  When she has episodes of very low sugar the doctor says to give her something sweet but once the numbers start to go up to follow it with protein.  The protein will level out the blood glucose levels.  Take care.

I only check it when I feel bad, so that I can correlate how I feel with how low it gets, if that makes any sense.  I guess I should check it at other times too, just never really thought about it.  As for how to handle the episodes, that's exactly what I do....about 15 grams of easily absorbed simple sugars followed about 15 min later with a small meal containing balanced protein, carbs, and fats....seems to bring be right out of it and keep me feeling stable, although I've never really checked it after.  I've never been diabetic....just started having these issues now that I'm further post-op.

Loralea, mine happens more often with white carbs or fried foods than anything.  French fries in particular do me in.  I eat candy everyday and rarely have a problem from it. (of course I keep the quantity small).  If I eat white carbs I try to make sure I also balance it with solid protein.

Mine starts like yours with the confusion and dizziness rapidly followed by the shaking and sweating.  The confusion part scares me but I've also alerted Clay and he knows what to do.  He usually gives me a drink of juice followed by peanut butter crackers.  I've had it happen while I've been sleeping and I wake up drenched in sweat and disoriented.  It's very scary.  Seems most prevelant starting at about 1.5-2 years out.

I know what triggers mine and have somewhat, sometimes learned to avoid the symptoms (read not so good choices and waiting to long after I eat the "bad" choices to counteract the reaction).

My choice of food to level the sugar out is peanut butter crackers.  It seems to level mine out quicker than anything else.  I get confusion and then shakey.  I can feel it coming on much better now than before and nip it in the bud without to much problem.

I've found it happening less for me instead of more frequently......now for some odd reason any time I eat sushi I can count on it happening (sticky rice maybe).

If I dont eat on a set schedule, with me its breakfast round 6, snack at 9, lunch at 11, snack around 3, dinner around 6, I will get this way. Especially if I start the day off eating crap. If I eat my 5x a day, I usually dont have that problem.

My fix is a PBJ or glass of milk if you can handle milk. The milk was actually a reccomendation from a doctor.

I would like to help you but you cant fix stupid.
