Low Blood Sugar

So the blood sugar is 47 right now, and my hands are shaking so bad that it's hard to open the candy wrappers (and hard to type).  This is just getting annoying now...happens about twice a week.  Is there anything you all do to keep address it other than just treat the symptoms when it happens?

(note to self:  pick up glucose tabs next time I'm at Walmart)

I find I do better if I eat more frequently and skip the carbs if it happens too often.
I usually only have trouble if I eat badly or drink too much without eating something substantial to buffer it.

I know Steph has it as well, and she's generally on the straight and narrow.

I know what you mean, sometimes (like today) I can pinpoint exactly what I did to trigger it.  The donut for breakfast obviously wasn't a good choice...and then nothing but that since 10 am. Slapping myself on the wrist for that...and eating a few grams of sugar and then some lunch should level it off.  But most of the time, I really can't see anything that caused it.  I promise it happens frequently even when I am on the straight and narrow.

I figured you're still pretty compliant, I was only talking about when it happens to me!

How often do you eat these days?

Well, the past couple days, since it's that TOM I've been eating every 5 min....LOL.  But really, I usually only eat 3 times a day, which is likely the problem.  I guess I knew that already, just needed to hear it from someone else.

I have been doing this about twice a week and I notice it if I have eaten anything sweet or high carbs, be cause our bodies produce the insulin to counteract, but because of surgery the sweet is out of our system before the insulin. Scared the crud out of me, I shake so bad, if I reach for crackers, soda or milk, I better not have to pour or open, cause when I am shaking that bad, well it is a mess. I do recognize it, when I first start getting nauseas then sweaty, then by the time I am shaking it is almost to late. If I have sweets, (even 1/2 sweet) or high carbs I am usually making sure something is at hand, just in case. It does not happen every time, but I am trying to be careful.
Sorry this is sooooo long. I hope it helps.

Mine starts with light-headedness and confusion...which sucks, cause it takes me awhile to figure out what's going on and what to do about it, and makes it difficult to communicate with Jon and the kids what's going on with me.  They've all been told what to do though, and I guarantee every one of my kids can find some candy, or other sugars, here in the house even when I think we don't have any...LOL.  I'm getting much better at recognizing it sooner though.  Just as a side note, I'm starting to feel a little better now...the sugar must have kicked in...now I'll just be wiped out for the next few hours.

And your post wasn't too long...it's great to hear from you.  I don't see you often enough. :-)

This used to happen to me all the time too.  The best way I've found to combat it is to eat smaller, but more frequent meals keeping a more constant blood sugar level.

My breakfast is Oatmeal or something similar with a fruit snack, protein and veggies for lunch with another fruit snack in the afternoon or protein shake, then more protein and veggies for dinner.

Only time I have issues now is when I haven't stuck to the schedule.

Hope it helps and good luck.  Last time it happened to me was Easter Sunday at church and I nearly passed out.  Had to be helped to a bench and then assisted to my car.  Talk about embarassing!

Yep same thing happens to me. I've found that if I eat Raisin Bran for breakfast it drops like that. I guess too much sugar. I'm bad about not eating much during the day and than loading up late night. But, yes it is scary. I try and keep peanut butter crackers in my purse. I've also noticed this seems to be a common problem for those of us further out.

Your loved!

Definitely not fun.  I've dealt with it before this surgery and since Feb last year more than before.  I eat every 2-3 hrs and try to include protein and complex carbs in all my meals.  That usually manages it for me, though there are times that I still have issues.  Then eating something quickly or taking a glucose tab is the only thing that makes it go away.  Hypoglycemia sucks, but it's a reality a lot of us face post-op.
