Procedures after WLS...questions

I am having to have a girly procedure on Friday.  I had WLS Jan 13th of this year and I am worried about waking up and what they are going to have me drink, eat etc. When my husband had nose surgery recently, they gave him sprite (thru a straw), and crackers.  These were ok for him, but not me.

Do I bring my own stuff? Protein drink? I can't do crackers and I can't do anything thru a straw.  Those things will not work for me.  I know they will have other things, and this can't be the only WLS patient they have had, but I am still worried about it.  Suggestions?  Anyone dealt with this?

TIA!

I have had a couple of things done since WLS.

Ask for a cup, no straw.  If you sip slowly and a little at a time thru the straw, it probably won't hurt but you can always set the straw aside.

As to the crackers, etc, ask if they have an alternative or if you can bring your own.  One of the procedures I've had done they offered pnut butter and grahams and I did 1/2 of the graham and all the pnut butter and was fine.

Where are you having it done?  You could ask ahead of time if they are a "WLS Friendly Facility" and see what they say.

Good Luck

You should be able to request a "sugar free" diet.  They probably have other drinks/foods available to you--- just let them know.

Good luck!

After my plastic surgery, they did water with saltines. Personally, I drink through a straw just about every day, but I'm really far out from RNY. Do make sure you hydrate before your procedure. If it's outpatient but they cath you, they'll make you pee before they'll release you. Spending like an hour and a half trying to pee is the only thing I really remember from my plastic surgery day of surgery.

Trish....I do believe that I would pack a little bag of "goodies" for you just in case they have nothing suitable for you to eat.    I have a friend who had a baby about 3 weeks ago and she also is a WLS patient.    When I went to visit her at the hospital...they had NOT given her any protein rich foods.   And this dear sweet new mom was nursing her new baby.   I went to the store and bought her high protein yogurt and some protein shakes and some string cheese.    That way she could get her protein levels up to where they should be since she was nursing she needed to be increasing her protein by 15 to 25 extra grams of protein.     She knew that I would do something about it.   LOL   I did tell the nurses...they said she was eating a "Balanced diet"....my response was maybe for a "NORMAL" person but not for a bariatric patient.     Good luck with your procedure.    As I said....I would be prepared just in case you get in the same delema !!!

THANK YOU!!!

I appreciate all the responses! Glad I posted this - because you have all put my mind at ease.  This is the Conroe Surgical Center and they say they do WLSs there, so they should be WLS Patient Friendly.  I will still pack my own stuff.

I can't do straws.  I have tried! I get really gasy, and my pouch feels all funky.  So I stay away from them.

Thanks again everyone!  I really do appreciate it!

Sincerely,
Trish
