leaking

Last night my main incision started leaking profusely and has not stopped.  I called my surgeon at 5:30 am this morning and she thinks I may have an infection.  I have done everything they have told me to.  I walk, bathe, and keep everything extremely clean.  I change clothes at least 2 times a day to make sure everything is clean.
Lord, I don't want to end up back in the hospital.  I can't smell anything from the discharge, and it is just a clear bloody liquid.  No fever, no chills, just pain, and leaking.
Has anybody else had this problem?

Hi,

I'm a lab tech, not a nurse, but I've seen this happen  before.  My mom had her appendix out and she leaked like this.  It was just excess fluid from the tissue around her wound site.  They told her as long as the discharge was clear, didn't smell and she had no fever she was fine.  At her post-op the doctor put a drain in because the swelling was still pretty intense and this helped drain the extra fluid and made the swelling go away.

Since you have a little blood tinge in yours, I would definitely do whatever your doc recommends.  If he/she thinks there might be an infection, grab the antibiotics and kit it's butt before it gets worse.  Always better to be proactive with infections!

Good luck with everything!

It happens sweetie, not to everyone but I've seen it happen to many in my 4 years on OH.  We see it often with plastic surgery also.  It appears you may have a slight infection, or a possibility of infection beginning, definitely see your surgeon she'll give you antibotics to get it doing better.

PS I had a slight infection after my plastics, mine healed quickly.   Try not to stress, take a deep breathe, being proactive in calling your surgeon was the right thing to do.

Thanks,
I have changed my bandage 3 times this morning because they were soaked.  The drainage is definetly getting worse.  I have had a spot or two in the past but this is leaking faster than I can keep bandages on.  There is no odor that I can smell but it is bothersome.  I am fixing to leave to go see my surgeon in about 20 min.

Definitely have it checked out.  I had this with my hysterectomy - "oh don't worry about it" and the next week I was in the hospital with a severe staph infection and spent six weeks with a wound vac getting it healed.  Better safe than sorry.  Don't take no for an answer!  Make sure they check it for infection.

Sounds like a seroma.  Not normal, but not uncommon after abdominal surgery.  Glad your going to see the doc to find out what it is..  The good news is no fever and no pus... hopefully it won't be an infection.

Well I just got back from the dr.  She had to deaden the incision sight, open it back up and drain it.  I was so full of infection that a couple more days would have landed me back in the hospital probably.  She packed the site and told me to take a shower tomorrow and remove the packing and redress with bandages.  She drained so much puss and bloody mess out of me that it wouldn't have quit draining for a long, long, long time. She also put me on Levaquin antibiotics.  I am kinda nauseas now after all that.
Good news was she increased my diet to cottage cheese, tuna, scrambled eggs, applesauce, and puddings.  Things that I wasn't suppose to get to start til week 3 and 4.  I had cottage cheese for lunch with 1/4 cup Silk Light.  I weighed in at 229.2 this a.m.  Yippeeeeee, I am losing about 1 lb per day.

Thanks for the advise and help...
Hugs,
DeborahL.

Sorry Deborah that you are having these issues.    Like Kathy said though it does happen to some people.   So glad that you did go get it checked out and that your doc got it all cleaned out.   Hopefully now you will heal properly and not have any more problems.
