Okay - guys..........I need your opinion.............no offense taken here..................

I know that we as RNY patients probably should keep our calories around 1000 - 1200 - just generally  and I also know that EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT.........so with that being said...........
My NUT told me last April when I was losing weight that  600- cal was way too low........so...what and where should we be at to be healty and maintain - if not LOSE...............

What is a guideline or where can I go to read about what we should be at.................

Daily Calorie intake ?

Fat Grams - in between what and what

Daily Carbs:   In between what and what.........

  • Pease check out Dr. Connie Stapleton's Website. A lot of good information on there for all WLS patients regardless of the surgery you chose.  Good luck to all and I'm here for you if you want to send me an email.  I'll answer it as soon as possible.
  • Total Lost:  139 lbs

I wish I knew the answer to your question.  I will give you what I think.  I try and stay between 1000-1500 a day to maintain and so far that is working for me.  I find that sometimes I need to increase my calorie intake for a few days and then go back down and I will drop the few pounds I might go up.

If you are doing alot of exercise you will need to take in more calories.  I still havent' figured out the fat and carb thing.  I still get confused on good fats and carbs and bad fats and carbs.LOL

Thank you TEENA !!

I think that there isn't such a good thing about GOOD FATS for us !!  lol

But good carbs - bad carbs ??

GOOD CARBS..........VEGGIES AND FRUITS

BAD CARBS.............POTOTO CHIPS, BREADS, ETC - YOU GET THE PIC !!  LOL

That is what I think.

I don't have any/all the answers, but I'm shocked that you were ONLY getting 600 cal...on ANY diet that's way way way too low.  Your body needs a certain amount daily to function.  I'm surprised your NUT didn't go ballistic.  I've always been told/read that 1000-1200 is for losing and adding a little more is maintenance.  Dana or one of the others will prob pop on here with the numbers for RNY'ers.  I know I DON'T lose if I am not getting enough IN because the burn stops automatically and my body goes into starvation mode.
Hope you get it figured out.  I know one of the knowledgable gals will pop up and let you see some #'s!

The 600 was when I was about 5 months or so out..........LAST APRIL !!   2008.........

YES - THE NUT DID GO BALISTIC.........I had to do a food diary for a couple of weeks and email it to her weekly !!        That is also when I had "food fear" is what my surgeon told me !!   lol

I want that feeling back !!     Now the only "fear" I have - ........is gaining  !!   lol

Yes - I figure that 1000-1200 is probably reasonable - however when I was younger - I use to gain weight on a 1200............maybe that is why I'm gainin too !!  lol

Okay I am having a hrad time getting very many calories at all....but i am only a little over 2 weeks out.  When will i be able to take in more? It seems to me that I can't eat more because it hurts sometimes. For example yesterday I was paying attention when I was eating and it was bad! I didn't get sick but I felt like some one wa****ting me in the chest! Finally it passed but I think today I am still feeling the after affects because now I really feel it when I drink water! I am also having a hard time finding any protien that I like.

Any help!

Yes - Be careful  NOT TO EAT TOO FAST..............you'll get those pains   in the chest feeling (that is where your pouch is).........I still get those when I eat too fast...........too much..........don't chew well enough.

You are only 2 weeks out...............it will be hard to get in 1000+ cal right now.........dont' worry about it much right now...............just remember

Phyllis....I was told to get in about 1200 calories a day.   I usually have no problems getting that in except lately I have been so busy with my house and emptying the pod in my drive which by the way....I just got it empty !!!!  YEAH for that one !!!!   Anyway just wanted to let you know that.   For me to loose weight.....I have to go to between 800 - 1000 calories a day and really step up my exercise program.    I have been loosing a couple of lbs lately and I am VERY pleased with that but trust me....it is very hard for my body to let go of the weight these days.   LOL   I wonder if it could be age???   LOL

I went to the Live Strong website and it has a tool to see how many calories you should take in to either lose or maintain based on height and weight, and I think exercise.  I put in that I was 160, 5'5 tall and no exercise.  To lose 2 lbs a week it said I should take in something like 1400 calories.  There is no way I can do that but I do shoot for that.  Maybe go there.

I just looked and its under the Daily Plate link on Live Strong.

Here's what works for me...when I'm doing what I supposed to do (always have to add that, cause I'm usually not...LOL)

Calories between 1200-1500 for maintenance (1000-1200 to lose about .5 - 1 lb per week).
Exercise a little to maintain....more regularly when I'm losing.  I can keep up the maintenance calories and still lose when I run regularly...amazing how that works...LOL

The ratio of protein/fat/carbs that I like for losing is 50% / 25% / 25%.  I maintain really well, and with a much more liberal diet (which means easier to stick to) on 30% / 40% / 30% though.  I use the other ratio when I'm losing because the higher protein and fewer carbs keeps me less hungry on fewer calories.

OK, so let me translate those numbers to some grams per day.

For maintenance at 1500 calories, 30/40/30:
113 grams protein
150 grams carbs (that will include 30+ grams of fiber if you're eating good carbs)
50 grams fat (and yes, there are good fats that your body NEEDS: omega 3,6, and 9...fish oil, olive oil, nuts, etc)

For maintenance at 1200 calories, 30/40/30:
90 grams protein
120 grams carbs
40 grams fat

To lose at 1200 calories, 50/25/25:
150 grams protein
75 grams carbs (quick rule of thumb here: keep total CARB grams half of total PROTEIN grams)
33 grams fat (quick rule of thumb here: keep total FAT grams half of total CARB grams)

To lose at 1000 calories, 50/25/25:
125 grams protein
63 grams carbs
28 grams fat

So there's all the numbers you asked for and then some.  Bottom line though....you have to do what your doc says, and what works for your body and activity level.
