trying to wrap my head around this forumula - what I do is check to see if the food is 10% or more protien - if it is 70 cals and 7 grams of protien it is a golden food - eat and enjoy - if it is 4-5 stop and think and eat if it ihas fiber and other good nutition, under 3 grams of protien per 100 cals and it is not to be eaten and counted as "healthy" foods for ME - I still may decide to eat it but it does not fit the high protien low carb goals I have - and since the number of cals in the protien equal a higher precent of the total I don't worry too much about counting carbs if the protien numbers are hight
I also do a quick sugar gram check - anything over 10 grams for the portion I will eat is a not b/c it will make me sick
ok that is my simpleistic view LOL

I've been using this method also. I think you posted about it some time ago, and it just clicked with me...probably cause I'm a math nerd...LOL. I find that it works very well, especially at the grocery store comparing some of the not-quite-so-WLS-friendly foods.....breads, for example. I know some people swear off them, but that's just not for me. I know I'm gonna eat some, so I try to pick out the better choice. I used the formula when trying to decide between white, whole wheat, seven grain, etc, etc bread, bagels, or english muffins. The double fiber english muffins won. Carb control tortillas were another score. They're not as good as homemade ones, but better than doing without, for me anyway.
It's surprising when you look at the label how little protein and fiber some things have, that are supposedly healthy....for example, anything called multigrain, has almost no grain that I can find on the label.
It's also very enlightening when comparing foods that are thought of as good alternate sources of protein. This formula is the reason that lowfat cottage cheese (53% cals from protein and fiber) and carb control yogurt (44%) are staples in my diet, but bacon (21%) and peanut butter (22%) are occasional treats.
