Need Cheap Eyeglass Advice!
My older brother fell yesterday on a sidewalk. He's in pretty good shape physically, thankfully, but he badly scratched up one of the lenses of his eyeglasses in the fall. He has had the eyeglasses for many years and can only see up close w/o them. They are the thick lens type and the scratch is really interfering with his vision in that eye.
I bought my brother one of those eyeglass scratch repair kits ("Lens C.P.R.", which replaced "Liquid Lens"), but it did a lousy job and he still can't see properly through the lens (what a waste of $20 ).
My brother went to the cheapest place around (supposedly) to see about getting a new custom pair of glasses - Walmart's optical shop -,and, in addition to $40 for the eye exam, they wanted almost $250.00 for the cheapest new ones. He left with prescription in hand, as he couldn't afford that much for the glasses. He then tried shopping at Walgreen's "generic eyeglass" selection (where our late mom used to get hers), but those glasses are apparently only good for reading, and not for persons who can't see distances.
Does anyone know what to suggest? I'm thinking maybe there is a place he can find some generic glasses cheaper than at Walmart, or possibly some place that can maybe grind or buff the scratch out of the lens, if that is possible,, but don't know where ..
Help!

not sure what the policy on glasses is (for meds you do not have to be a memeber) at costco but they had the best prices on lenses - we have 3 people in glasses in our house so we have checked lots of places - theirs start at about $80 vs walmart at $130 (both were starting prices for single vision glasses)
the other thing I like is they will not sell you the cheapest lenses for someone under 18 but then they give you a discount that equals the diffence in price - just their policy that kids do not need to be in the cheaper ones
mine are always more than the guys b/c I have worse eyes - that is just how it is
if he has had the same lenses for many yrs than he did need the new perscription - they are only good for one yr for a reason
just my 2 cents

I went to LUX optical on Seminary in Ft Worth, it's a small outlet store for Luck optical and Bifocal are $75 for any frames they have.
I caught a sale at Optical mart, though the other day on S. Cooper and they were only $45. They also so have more expensive frames. Talk to Judy there she is very nice and see if they can fill your 'script before you go, both places just fill you eyeglass perscription and do not do exams.
