My doc n nut both told me under 5 calories per 8 oz serving for me to count it as water. Try some crystal lights if plain water bugs. I go back n forth between water cl n cl teas. If u drink coffee n you r allowed caffine u can count it at 50percent - so 8 oz real coffee with less than 5 cals of additives counts as 4 oz. Some docs say Some

Your plan sounds great and you are doing really good..........

The only thing that I challenge is your "lunch".  That seems to be a little too starchy I think - but hopefully someone will chime in here.......I know that you are only 2 weeks out...but if you could do maybe a little tuna or ground up chicken (get a magic bullet ) and puree that stuff....

12 noon - lunch - still a work in progress, but today I have brought 5 wheat crackers, and some mac and shells... I can only eat like 5 spoon fulls of it, if that, it's crazy but it's lunch!

I'm 20 mos out and I still try to avoid mac and cheese cuz I just don't see a whole lot of benefit from eating that much starch and very little protein.

nobody bash me too badly - please.
  • Pease check out Dr. Connie Stapleton's Website. A lot of good information on there for all WLS patients regardless of the surgery you chose.  Good luck to all and I'm here for you if you want to send me an email.  I'll answer it as soon as possible.

I totally see what you're saying Phyllis!!

I questioned this myself, but while I'm trying to try new things I have not been able to tolerate lots of stuff. So I'm trying to make it through this soft food week, and then next week I can try different stuff. I have a hard time with the chicken, blended. My tummy just does NOT like it. I actually bought a magic bullet already, but the mixed up puree type stuff does not work for me. So I am trying to go with things that I cann tolerate that are still soft. I might be able to try some mixed up veggies or something!!!!!

What do you think about that??? Think that would be a better idea then the mac and cheese? the only reason I'm having it is because it's food that I can tolerate! I am actually having a hard time wanting any food at all. I'm just never hungry and everything stinks!!

I can't remember my 2 weeks out....lostall of my records I kept on my computer a couple of years ago....
here are a few things I tried when I could....
very pureed tuna with a little miracle whip light on 2-3 wheat crackers. (dying for crunch then!)
taco bell refried beans (no red sauce for me)
cream of wheat made with carnation instant milk and unflavored protein powder added in
SF pudding with carnation milk and either choc or unflavored protein powder mixed in
I used Hoods carb countdown milk to mix anything that called for it...had a high protein count...Heard Mootopia is good too but since I had my baby 3 years ago I can't handle any milk or protein drinks made with it....so I haven't tried it.
I would use the little 4 oz containers that were glad or ziploc I think and then I knew that it was 2 servings...
Good luck!~~~~

Stacey, I'm with Phyllis.  I think there are much better choices out there than the mac and cheese.  At 2 weeks Dr Barker released me to eat regular foods, starting with the soft ones first.  Try chicken salad, tuna or egg salad on crackers, string cheese, chili, pinto beans, a mushed up meatball with spaghetti sauce over it, potato soup, vegetable soup, yogurt, the carrots and potatoes from a pot roast chopped up really fine with a little gravy to moisten.  Pasta is hard to digest so I would try something else for now.  Also avoid bread and rice.  Good luck you seem to be doing fantastic.  Keep those questions coming.

Congratulations on your surgery, and it's great that you are already going to the board asking questions.  Even though the protien drinks don't count as your liquid, this early on, I would count it.  There is no way I would have been able to get 64 oz of liquid plus all that protien in the first month.  My doctor was mostly concerned that I didn't get dehydraded.  You might want to call the Dr or nutritionist and check with them.  I agree that pasta is probably a bit starchy, but as early out as you are, if you can tolerate it, and if it is the stage of food that your doctor has you on right now, go for it.  I ate alot of cream of wheat and grits those first couple of weeks, but I added unflavored protien powder to them (add powder after you cook the food).  Now that I'm a year out, instead of pasta, I generally eat Kashi pilaf (7 whole grain) so that the grain carbs are more complex.  Greek yogurt is also good if you can tolerate dairy.  I get plain fat-free and add splenda or sometimes I add a packet of bottle-water flavoring like Crystal Light.  Greek yogurt has more protein and calcium than regular.  Don't rush into the next stage of food, even if you feel like you can.  If you follow the doctor's food plan, you will be ok, but sometimes people feel like they can eat heartier food than the plan calls for, and it can cause healing problems.  Everything smells and tastes different to me too.  It is better now that I'm so far out, but it is still different than before surgery.
Good luck

Satcy, you've gotten lots of great advice already.  I'll just ditto on the water/crystal light....the pasta - and instead recommend that you go for pudding, yogurt, cottage cheese, split pea soup, baby food, puree'd meats, etc....and the fruit juice, I'm super sensitive to sugar and have water it down 50/50, just be careful.
