So sorry yall are going through this. Try not to dwell on what could have been....I know that's much easier said than done. If it helps....it really doesn't matter whether they call it vacation or PTO, there's no obligation for companies to pay out either when they let someone go. It's customary to pay vacation, but not required since there is no requirement in Texas for companies to even provide vacation days at all.
As far as the owner goes, I can say I've been in both positions (boss and employee) and unless he's just totally heartless this is very hard for him too. When there's just not enough to go around you have to make some really hard decisions that you otherwise wouldn't do. It' very painful to know you're directly impacting the livelihood of your employees and their families. Some people deal with that responsibility more gracefully than others.

And yes, I can believe they hired someone to come in and do their dirty work - my own company did that twice after we were bought out - once in 2002 and again in 2005. I was laid off in 1984 and it really, really hurts.
