This is one of those times!
My husband just joined the ranks of the unemployed due to the economy. Anyone looking for an electrical engineer or a controls designer......... There are so many on here now. I have a question for those who have already applied for unemployment. He did get a small package (I'm so stressed, I can't even remember what it's called now)....they told him he couldn't apply for unemployment though until that package is expired. Is this true? Cause that would probably mean he also can't register with the TWC?? Would you believe they just hired someone to come in and let people go......!

No problem. I was laid off on 4/20 and my official last day was 5/1. I had a 6 week severance plus all of my unused vacation time and unpaid commissions. I filed for unemployment on 5/4 (the first business day after my official last day) and my benefits were approved on 5/7 and I received a letter in the mail confirming I would be receiving the full $392/week. When you initially apply, they do not ask you if you've received a severance package.
My first date to actually file a claim was 5/18 and when I did, I had to disclose the details of my severance then. They did not pay me benefits for the weeks of 5/4 and 5/11. Today was my next filing day, so I filed this morning. I just logged in and my payment has yet again been denied due to the severance package. My next claim file date is 6/14. I supposed I will probably not get benefits then, either.

The companies all call it severance, but to the TWC there is a big difference between severance (eligible for unemployment after 1 week) and wages in lieu of notice (eligible after all wages paid + 1 week). Also, if he signed an agreement not to sue, then the severance is actually consideration for that agreement and not wages....bottom line, eligible for unemployment after 1 week.
Either way, apply immediately, and let them decide eligibility. He definitely won't receive benefits without applying.

Loralee is right! This happened to my sister also! Plus, they offer training to upgrade your skills, so he might want to check into this. Well, on second thought, he's an electrical engineer, he probably has enough training, huh!!
But tell him to file for unemployement NOW! Don't wait!! Also, don't volunteer information they don't ask for!!
