Kat, I'm so sorry to hear this, it's frightening how many people are now effected.  Also tell him to get his resume on Monster cuz a lot of places look there for qualified people.  He has a great education and background so hopefully it won't be too long.

Thanks everyone....I thought you use to be able to get severance and benefits, but I told him not to wait until the time was up.  He walked off and forgot the papers they gave him cause he was so shocked.  I hope they actually give them to him but I will be very surprised.  On top of that they switched all their leave from vacation and sick leave to personal time off (PTO) so he gets absolutely none of his vacation pay.  I met the owner once and I really thought they were above some of the things they have been doing lately.  What really scares me is his age......too old for a strong future in a company and too young to retire.......

Hey Kat,

So sorry yall are going through this.  Try not to dwell on what could have been....I know that's much easier said than done.  If it helps....it really doesn't matter whether they call it vacation or PTO, there's no obligation for companies to pay out either when they let someone go.  It's customary to pay vacation, but not required since there is no requirement in Texas for companies to even provide vacation days at all.

As far as the owner goes, I can say I've been in both positions (boss and employee)  and unless he's just totally heartless this is very hard for him too.  When there's just not enough to go around you have to make some really hard decisions that you otherwise wouldn't do. It' very painful to know you're directly impacting the livelihood of your employees and their families.  Some people deal with that responsibility more gracefully than others.

Sending you hugs and prayers for new opportunities...and fast!

I am so sorry, Kat.  I can't believe how fast the jobs dried up in this country.  18 months ago your husband could have landed another job within a couple of weeks with his skills.

And yes, I can believe they hired someone to come in and do their dirty work - my own company did that twice after we were bought out - once in 2002 and again in 2005.  I was laid off in 1984 and it really, really hurts.

My prayers go out to your family.

Sarah
