The recommendation can vary from patient to patient, your surgeon should formulate a recommendation for your body type, age, and activity level.  It can vary from .8 up to 2.0g of protein per kg of body weight.  Most WLS patients follow the .8, but if yoiu have special needs or are very active you'll need more.  I typically consume 100-125g per day and at my goal weight of 135 that means I'm taking in 2.0g of protein per kg of my body weight.  I'm very active so I'm on the high end.  (very active = 2-4hrs a day at the gym becuase I'm a personal trainer part time)

The best source in supplements is Whey Isolates.  Studies suggest that it is the type best absorbed.  The particles are smaller whoch allows anyone with limited absorption the opportunity to take in more than say from Whey concentrates.  Soy Isolates would be the second best, then casien.

Protein is the most important because your entire body is formed from various proteins chains.  Basic cell structure is made of protein chains.

My favorite protein supplements are- Shakes: Click and Optinum Nutrition's Vanilla Ice Cream, Bars: pure protein and EAS Carb Control.  My favorite natural occuring protein is from eggs, chicken, cheese, nut butters, tuna, salmon and extra lean ground beef.

STEPHANIE-Kudos for doing your research!! As with EVERYTHING..we are all different, and as ALWAYS, follow your DOCTOR's instructions for YOU..

Now that we got that pesky disclaimer out of the way...

I am 7 years out...this is what I do..me..me ... me...

I shoot for 100 gm a day, so I'll reach 80. At least 40 of that normally comes from a supplement, that I either drink or use as a powder, added to pudding, soup, etc. My current fave protein is Unjury (only available at www.unjury.com    and no, I am not a salesman or a stockholder, but I ought to be, as much as I BUY!!)

ALL nutrients are IMPORTANT-even those dreaded CARBS. That's why moderation and good plain, common sense is so important. It's already obvious you have common sense, but by the great questions you have been asking. Basically what I ususally tell people is that PROTEIN builds MUSCLE, and your HEART is a MUSCLE...Do you want your HEART to keep working???? Then you need your PROTEIN...That usually gets 'em..

As far as "how much" I can eat all depends on WHAT it is....a dense chicken breast....maybe 2-3 oz...air fluff popcorn...a horse trough full (don't ask me how I know)....but...I DO know my tool WORKS whne I take it out of the shed!!!

My doctor has me on 70g protein a day.  Now that I'm a year out, I can get it in, but up untill now, it's been hard.  I get an egg-beater omelet every morning, and I have protein powder in decaf coffee most afternoons.  I eat Greek yogart with Kashi high-protein cereal or cheese with Kashi crackers for dinner alot..  Alot of protein bars make me ill, but I do eat South Beach cereal bars and they have 10g protein.  I also eat Kashi granola bars, which have some protein, fiber, and good carbs.

How much protein after weight loss is the recommendation? 60-80 gms per my doctor and most leading authorities.

How much do you really get?  60-100 per day

Whats the best source?  This depends on what stage you're in.  Initially I got most of mine from protein drinks.  Now I have one protein drink per day that has 30 gms in it.  The rest I get from food.

What is your favorite?  My favorite protein powder is Chocolate Max Protein but it's only available at certain GNC stores.  But from food, I get a lot from shrimp, chicken, red meat, lunch meat.  Those are my staples.

Is protein the most important in the diet as far nutrition? Absolutely, well that and vitamins.

After WLS typically how many ounces do you consume.  Again it depends on the stage you're in.  In the beginning I could only eat an ounce or two at a time.  Now, at 2 years out I can each a 6 inch Subway sub.

How much protein after weight loss is the recommendation?  70-80 gms
How much do you really get?  usually 80-90 unless my routine is messed up

Whats the best source?  I start nearly every morning with 1/2 cup cottage cheese with 500 mg UpCalD calcium citrate mixed in and a scoop and a half of protein powder mixed in my coffee.  That gives me 43 gms so I am over halfway to my minimum before I even have lunch.
What is your favorite?  GNC Pro Performance chocolate caramel flavor, followed by IDS cinnamon vanilla

Is protein the most important in the diet as far nutrition?  YES!

After WLS typically how many ounces do you consume.
I am 10 months out so I can eat about 1/2 cup cottage cheese, 3-4 oz of chicken, pork, beef and 3-4 oz of cheese at a time.  I usually do a couple of string cheeses in the afternoons for a snack.  Or sometimes a smoothie with protein powder, yogurt and frozen fruit.

Early on I could only eat 1-2 oz and one string cheese at a time.
