Ok so yall all know im one of the top whiners here with reards to miraines and neck./shoulder issues.  (the letter between the f and h is stuck on my keyboard so bear with me).  So had a miraine this weekend that started with the neck/shoulder issue.  Ended up havin to hit the PCP's office for relief.  So PCP did do a referral for a pain manaement clinic in Houston, which im happy about coz im not at all thrilled about the narcotics he prescribed.  Im a lil concerned about tradin one addiction (food)| for another.  However, he also wrote me a script for Piroxicam which is a once a day NSAID/anti imflammatory.  Knowin i had RNY, he says when i need to take it, to chase it with a Prilosec and i should be ok.  What do yall think? I know we have some folks here that have RA and such, and i was wonderin how yall deal with it.  Now, before you all chime in with 'call your sueon' thats not an option as he retired.
All opinions welcome
Thanks
Liz

...and why did I know you'd be up this time of night/morning?!?  My excuse?  Mommy duties.  Sucks, I know, but I get more done this time of "day" than any other time!

Be careful with the NSAIDS.  You do NOT want a hole in the ol' belly.  I know Naaman isn't around, buuuut, did you know Dr. Garth is now over there at Memorial City?  Maybe their office will take you since your doc isn't around.  I know they don't generally take patients who went to other docs, but I know they take over care when a person moves here so if your doc is retired, maybe they would too?  Anyway, just was thinkin' along the lines of getting established with another bariatric doc so you'd have someone to call.  Did you get the sleep study done yet?  Like you say, the narcotics are a whole 'nuther can of worms so just be careful but of of course you know that!!!  Just worry bout' ya' you know!!!

I cant get anyone to take me.. its soooooo frustrating!.  Ya im really concerned about the NSAIDS.  ONce in a blue moon is one thing, but more than that concerns Me.   Same with the narcotics.. once In a while Is fine, But other than that, Not so sure.  Definately dont want to be takin those on a daily basis! UGH! Talk about a rock and a hard place! Geez ya know! lol. Think im just gonna go play on IH 10 during rush hour lol.
Go to bed!

Have you tried Dr. Wilson's office?

Because he's affiliated with Baylor, he takes on new patients.  He's Andrea's surgeon (my good friend who runs the support group at MMH-The Woodlands).  She adores him, as she should!  :-)

Now, on NSAIDS, not sure if you remember but I took Celebrex in an experimental attempt to limit or even eliminate adhesion growth after surgery.  I took 200 mg twice a day for 30 days and 200 mg once a day for an additionanl 30 days.  Dr. Lavin prescribed CARAFATE for me to take prior to the Celebrex.  (I think it's was 30 minutes prior and an additional dosage when I was not due to take the Celebrex.)

All of that said, I was taking it every day so we exercised extreme caution with the Carafate; however, Dr. Lavin believes that NSAIDS are fine for occational usage without a proton pump inhibitor.

I've been typing so much now that I can't even remember the original statement about how often you were wanting or needing to take it!  LOL

Sorry about that! LOL

Garth Davis refused to see me when I moved here from Louisiana.   However, my surgeon in LA went to Ohio State with him so he personally called Garth and asked him to see me as "a favor."   So, Garth saw me; however, if I had listened to his advice, I'd be dead; so, it didn't work out very well.   I have had to travel back to Louisiana for all my complications because no one here will touch me.  That said, Dr. Wilson, is with MMH-Downtown and because he is in the "public" system, he can't refuse anyone and, in fact, when I called to make an appointment to see him, it went very smoothly and the staff was very helpful; unfortunately, I ended up back in LA for an emergency surgery because I didn't get in to see him in time.  I keep saying that I'm going to reschedule with him to establish a physician here.  If the pattern continues, I will need one.

ANYWAY, the whole point of this was that it is my understanding that Dr. Garth Davis (not certain about his father) refused to see me when I was simply a "relocation."

I've been cleaning; I think the bleach got to my brain!  Ugh!

ok...MY vote:

Take it..for now..give it a month..but...ALWAYS take it with food (just a lil cracker and 1/2 cup pudding or cottage cheese is enough)...Prilosec god idea, but something in the belly MORE important IMHO...

You can't keep on with the headaches and expect to be a functional human being...

I had a "bout of gout"....heh, that rhymed...when I was about 5 months post, and had to take Celebrex for about 3 months. Since I was a POSTER CHILD way back then I fought my doc tooth and nail, but that gout stuff hurt like a broken bone, so I took the med--always with food, as described above, by my doc...did okay..MY experience, of course..but you asked for opionions

My 2 cents....

Doc Green told me to take NSAIDS with care.  He said as long as I do not make a habit of it, which it was pre-op, I would be fine.  IMHO you are far enough out to safely take it.  I have osteoarthritis and there are days I cannot move my fingers or knees.  Those are the days I take the NSAIDS.  Gotta have those fingers to work.

Mind your tummy.  If it causes distress, stop it.  If anyone deserves a break it is you....

I agree with Gina.  I've taken various NSAIDs for short times since my surgery, with something like Prilosec, and with my surgeon's blessing.  Of course there's always a risk of the ulcers, but try to balance that with the potential relief you will get from the headaches/neck pain, etc.  Who knows, maybe if your head/neck isn't hurting you might be able to sleep??

Hope you take it and it helps girl!

When I have to take nsaids for my arthritis I take a presctiption Protonix with it...basically prescription strength Priloec.  I do not take them all of the time, but I do take them as needed.  I just have to be aware and be careful.
