My doctor and nutritionalist put me on a 2 week preop LOW carb, High protein diet.  They said basically stay on the Atkins diet and I will be good.
Well I bought the shakes, no problem there, but I also bought the protein bars.  On the front of the box it says 2 grams of carbs, but on the back it says 22 grams.  What is up with that??? Should I be counting the back or the front???
I am so confused...

HELP!!!!!!

For a pre-op diet you count carbs by taking the "total carbs" and subtract both the "Sugar alcohol" and "Fiber" to get the "Net carbs".

Now once you're post-op you want the "sugar" less than 6-7 gm per serving.  Also watch out for sugar alcohol post-op, it can cause major diarrhea.

Thank you so much.  I don't know why the nutritionalist and dr. didn't say that in the first place.
All this is Greek to me.I have been pulling my hair out trying to figure this out and of course it is a holiday and I couldn't call anybody.

thank you thank you thank you....

I count net carbs, take out the fiber and alcohol like Steph said.  The net affects of the carbs is what affects us most.  Higher fiber is going to be necessary post-op.
