This is a double post (I just replied to someone else's post) but I thought it good enough to repost on it's own.

Bariatric advantage now has chewable calcium citrate in chocolate and lemon.

Did you know Bariatric advantage now makes the calcium citrate in chewables?  Chalky Chocolate heaven, they are, lol!!  I went to my 9 month follow up with Dr. Garth Davis Thursday.  As I was leaving the office I saw a sample bucket of silver wrapped somethings.  I grabbed one and popped it in my mouth, yum chocolate.  I turned right around and went back to see what I just ate (though I should have done that before I put it in my mouth) and the nurse said it's new chocolate calcium citrate chewables for Bariatric Advantage so I bought two bags.  They are really good.  Obviously they are slightly chalky but it's definitely not a problem.  There is also lemon flavor but I haven't tried those yet.

There used to be a product called Citracal Creamy Bites that we all just LOVED but the company went out of business.  BA is trying their own version of them and I'm anxious to try them.  The thing is, you have to chew 2-4 per day depending on how much calcium you normally take.  Each chew has 250 mg of calcium.  I also remember the calories were pretty high in the originals so it was like adding an extra 100 calories to your daily diet.  I'll have to check out the calorie count on these new ones.  Thanks for the heads up.

Here is the stats on the chocolate ones.  Garth wants us to get 1200 - 1500mg each day so, 5 - 7 per day is 75 - 105 calories per day extra?  Did I do the math right??

Serving Size: 1 chew
Nutrient Amount %DV
Calories 15
Total Carbohydrate 3 g 1%*
Sugars 0 g
Sugar Alcohol 3 g
Vitamin D 125 IU 31%
Calcium (from Calcium Citrate) 250 mg 25%
Sodium 10 mg 10%

Yup the math is right but it sounds awefully expensive to me.  I'll stick to my Citracal Petites from Walmart since I can swallow whole pills with no problems.

I always thought my Twin Labs chewables from Vitamin Shoppe were expensive, too so I did a little research this morning on cost of calcium citrate.....

I calculated the cost of 1500 mg / day of calcium citrate as my basis.

I took the (mg/servings) x (# servings) / 1500 to find out the number of days in the bottle.  Then I divided the price by the number of days to calculate a cost per day.

For citracal petites, each pill is 200 mg x 200 pills per bottle / 1500 = 26 days in a bottle.  I found a price online at Walgreens for $13.50 (could not find Wal Mart price online), so 50 cents per day.  I did not figure in shipping or sales tax for local purchases, so these are approx costs.

Here is my summary:

Brand                           # Days          $$$          $/Day

Citracal Petites                26           $13.50      $0.52
BA Chews                        10            $9.99        $1.00
BA Chalky                         72           $40.00      $0.55
Twin Labs                        10            $9.49        $0.95
UpCalD                            38            $13.49      $0.35

For grins I did it for 1200 mg/day:

Here is my summary:

Brand                           # Days          $$$          $/Day

Citracal Petites                33           $13.50      $0.41
BA Chews                        12.5        $9.99        $0.80
BA Chalky                         90           $40.00      $0.44
Twin Labs                        12.5         $9.49       $0.76
UpCalD                            47.5         $13.49      $0.28

Girl, this is why we love you on this board.  Thanks for doing this for us.  Sometimes what we think is expensive turns out not to be.  So I guess this proves you're not just a bee keeper, lol!!

I only take 2 per day (400mg total) and so far my labs and bone density tests have been normal.  Since I had a hysterectomy almost 20 years ago they don't have me taking iron either and so far my levels have been perfect.  I'll adjust as my labs tell me too.  You can't take the calcium within 2 hrs of iron plus if you have to take a bunch of them I would certainly spread them out over the course of the day.  I love the size of the petites, they're like taking a normal pill.
