How do you guys get your calories up without eating a lot of carbs and not so much supplements, but real foods?

Any suggestions and advice would be great!! Thanks!

One word: CHEESE...tons of calories and lots of protein too.  I love Havarti cuz it's smooth and creamy.  Also meat has a lot of calories and good protein.  I grill of a lot so I always have some on hand.

I believe adding things like cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese, raw veggies and lower glycemic fruit is the best bet to add calories.  Denser proteins work to but your pouch will limit the amount you can get in, with veggies and softer protein you can consume a little more.

Have you considered boiling eggs and adding it in as snacks?

Dana,

Thanks for the suggestions!! I'm having a hard time with getting my calories up, but I don't want to add a lot of carbs. Everything has carbs-- veggies and fruit-- it was frustrating seeing that. But, I do know I will get some carbs, but I don't want too much. I am trying to tweak my diet and exercise so that the scale will move in the right direction. I am still struggling with the lbs coming off. So, my trainer suggested stopping carbs and limiting the amount of fruit that I eat. So, with that being done I am not getting over 1000 calories a day.

I hadn't thought about the boiled eggs.... I eat the "all liquid white" egg for breakfast. I do eat cottage cheese, carb control yogurt, and strawberries & grapes. I bought broccoli and celery for raw veggies.

I alwas appreciate your suggestions... I am going to have to add more cheese in somewhere.. Or something.

Peanut butter, maybe?  Not sure on the carbs in peanut butter.  I don't count carbs but I know I use it for calories on my low days.

Cheese and yogurt are great suggestions.  I don't cut out carbs completely, but as a general rule for grain type carbs, if Kashi doesn't make it, I don't eat it.  Often I don't get more than 1000 calories in a day, but I'm a moderate exerciser.  Are you working out a whole lot?  How many calories are they suggesting you get?

I do workout a lot. My personal trainer refers to me as a "athlete" its so strange. I do cardio 6 times per week, strength traininer 2-3 times per week, heavy weights/lifting 2x per week, and flexibility training everyday. One dietician/nutritionist I saw suggested 1300-1600, but gradually getting up to 2000. Another, suggested 2200. Those just seem WAY too high. To get that amount of calories, I would CONSTANTLY be eating. I feel OVERALLY exhausted when I get more than 1300 calories in.
