Want to know what can happen
Ok, I'm on my rant of taking vitamins again. So you may THINK your B vitamins, iron, calcium, multi-vitamins, Vit D, Vit A and the host of others dictated by labs aren't important FOREVER.......think again, I hope none of you learn the hard why what will EVENTUALLY happen if you don't take your supplements.

This was an extremely overwhelming post for me...I could not even get through all of the replies on the post you added. I have bordered on anemic and am ashamed to say I don't rememeber my last b-12 number....it is time for my blood work and need to MAKE my doc (PC) listen to me on which tests NEED to be run. You may have forwarded your info to me before but if it isn't too much trouble can you do it again? (as far as what tests need to be run-I think he will listen) I AM going in for an appointment next week to get things taken care of before my busy "season" in my child care starts. I have been taking my vits "most" days but need to do better....how many b-12 shots are necessary of does it depend on the person? Love ya girl and reall appreciate all the advice ...I don't really remember ever on this board that vitamins became such a big issue...but with Debra and others...there is SOMETHING there that newbies NEED TO KNOW! Very scary....still would not trade my surgery .....but relizing now it is NOT the mgic cure and requires much commitment......
Wow, what a story, thanks for the link. I have no idea what my latest B-12 level is...I think it's around 400 an thought I was doing OK cuz it was way above "normal". I'm going to check my paperwork when I get home tonight so I can up it if needed.

WOW I did read that post last night~you know a saturday night spent on OH...I have not done that in forever and on the main board, just kinda shocked me and I kept saying "really" "really, do peeps NOT educate themseleves any more"?
I know over the corse of my 5 year journey I have not been as faithful as I should be on my vitamins, however I have a wonderful PCP that together we educated ourseleves on post op WLS, with that I go faithfully for labs every three months...and we have always adjusted my labs accordenly...
She laughed way back when and took me off the damn flintstone vitamins at 5 weeks post op, she then gave me a chewable prenatal vitamin that I took for at least a year...then moved on to one that I could swollow....
When I feel out of sorts, we adjust to my symtoms, I have always done both B-12 injections and sublingual....she stays on top of all of my calcuim levels, I get bone density tests done once a year~ I know when Debra starting gettting so ill, I printed off posts and replys and brought it to my doctor so we would both have an understanding of how our levels can drop off, and we can become so sick so fast.
Dana, in the past I have taken your list of labs to my PCP so she would know the importance of all of them.
My PCP has worked her butt off educating herself, she has even gone to WLS seminars, she is not at all hesitant to call a WLS while I'm there in the office (normally mine) and ask questions; I told her from the start we can work on this together, I know it is going to be a long road, lots of labs, and committment on both our parts, my as the paitent hers as a doctor listening to my symtoms. She has done an outstanding job with my aftercare.
I honestly can say in light of the recent events with Debra, it has scared the crap out of me; so I now have a pill holder with all my vitamins in it....I have found a gummy adult vitamin that is working wonders for me, I do not get the tummy pain I normally get when taking a vitamin pill, my iron pill is small OTC one same as my calcuim, and b-12 pills, I take a B12 injection now every 2 weeks; I pray every night for Debra, It scares me and I know she is scared; I think of her each and everytime over the last couple of weeks when I take them...LOL
I think of you Dana when I finish all my water for the day...LOL
But seriously....What happened to the days when we all educated ourseleves on the surgery we were having done? I can remember the support and education that I got from this site....back 5 plus years we were told to take Flintstones and tums, but not for ever, just a few weeks post op....Why oh Why are peeps not following doctors orders???
I'm sure the OP and Debra did not set out to do this to themseleves, and unfortunately we are all learning form them....so newbies, please read these posts know the importance of you vitamins and most of all please EDUCATE yourself on your surgery!!
Okay, I really have to get off this soap box, because I know how I feel about this topic...LOL
LOve you all, Debra please know that you are always in my prayers, and I'm soooo sorry that you are going through this!! You have 100's of peeps pullin for you!
Dana thank you for posting this post, everyone can benefit from it!!

Unfortunately not allWLS surgeons are in this for the common good but only for the money making aspect cause it can be a great moneymaker!! I am lucky my surgeon isone who truly cares. He keeps up with all the studies on weight loss and is very big on educating! Istill take 2 flintstones daily,b12 daily, vit d dqaily, iron daily, calcium citrate daily and my prevecaid 2x daily. I am 2 years out and have good labs. However I do know when I don't, I get into trouble fast. In Dec I had run out of iron and just didn't get around to reordering. Big mistake! I ended up having iron infusions that blew out 4 veins and I looked like a junkie!! Now I keep extra in the cabinet and order before I am out!!
And that is my sopa box!

dana,
You KNOW this is what happened to my BFF Madelyn's sister. She was found last fall wandering through a vacant field OUT of her wheelchair. Luckily she was coherent enough to crawl to her cell phone by her wheelchair and call 911. She was following the pretty balloons that God told her to follow. They did testing on her but I bet they didn't follow up with the b-12. Her WLS doctor is long since retired and I know she doesn't keep up with that aspect of her health. I have tried, but I don't know what will happen.
Anyway, I have seen it twice now in peeps I love. I have my b-12 and Emm shoots me about every 10 days. I am going to add my sublinguals again too.. That time I take to load up my vitamin box for the week is well worth it.
thanks for the reminder.
