Ok, so I have been smacked by the weight loss plateau fairy! Omg.  I am only 2 weeks post op. The first week I lost 2lbs a day for a total of 14lbs. The last 7 days, NOTHING. Today, I was down a pound. I don't get it. I know they happen, but grrrrrr.... I didn't think I would hit one that quick and for an entire week. Bad thoughts are going through my brain- "I FAILED", and I know that is not try and I am trying to rethink it, but I am getting worried. What am I doing wrong? My doctor gave me the ok to eat mashed foods today. I am on mash taters, cottage cheese, eggs, etc. I drink as much as I can. 60+ grams of protein. Is there a reason? Will it stop? Hubby comes home next Wednesday and I really wanted to lose at least a size by the time he came home. My clothes are certainly big on me, but I wanted him to see a difference and be proud.

Thank you for your help, I know you all are good at making me feel better! LOL. I am having a WLS moment!

I am so sorry that you are having to deal with this at such a early time in your post op life.   Here is something to keep that can help you to break those plateaus in the future.   Good luck and don't get discouraged....when the plateaus come the inches come off.

Hugs and blessings ~~~ Vivian

PLATEAU BUSTERS DIET

How to break a plateau:

#1 - Do this for 10 days at break a plateau

#2 - Drink 2 quarts of water a day

#3 - You must have 50 grams of protein supplement and all your vitamins/minerals supplements each day.

#4 - You may consume up to 3 oz of the following high protein foods, 5X’s a day

beef

pork

chicken

turkey

lamb

fish

eggs

low fat cheese

cottage cheese

plain yogurt or artificially sweetened

peanut butter ( the original doesn’t say...but I would limit this to once a day....also I would only do one serving size and NOT 3 oz. )

beans/legumes

You may also have :

sugar free popcicles

tea or coffee

sugar free jello

broths/ boullion

crystal light drinks

#5 - If it is not on the list, you can’t have it for 10 days !!!

#6 - Keep a food diary and try to get up to 30 minutes of exercise daily.

In addition to the Plateau Buster, you can change up your exercise plan as well. Such as if you are walking, change up things and do other exercises every other day so that you are not doing the same things on a daily basis. You can also add in weights. Good luck !!!

GOD GRANT ME THE SERENITY TO ACCEPT THE THINGS I CAN NOT CHANGE;   COURAGE TO CHANGE THE THINGS THAT I CAN;  AND THE WISDOM TO KNOW THE DIFFERENCE !!!!    THIS IS MY DAILY PRAYER.

My first stall came at the second week and lasted until the 5th week postop.  it's ok.  just relax and remember that your body is stressing out over what you have done to it.  It's not happy with you right now.  It's trying to hang on to everything it can.  I PROMISE you that your weight loss will pick back up.  Stay off the scales.   Because I freaked out when I actually had gained a couple of pounds during that time.  Just keep following your rules and drinking your liquids.  You will lose and will look back and wonder why you worried so.  Or at least I did.

As far as seing a difference.  You husband will see the difference before you do.  But buy an outfit that is in a smaller size and wear that when you see him next week.  That will make you feel better.  Plus you dont' want to hide your weight loss under those oversized clothes when you see him.

I lost 21 lbs in 2 week**** a stall on week three and at the beginning of week 4 lost 6 lbs overnight.  It's normal as your body tries to hold on to everything so it doesn't experience famine.....hang tight and follow your plan, the lbs will start coming off again.

In the mean time did you measure before surgery?  If so, measure today and look at the inches you are losing.  If you did not measure before, please do so today and use that to show a cross reference with the lbs are falling off more than likely the inches are.

Edited to add:  I see Vivian gave you the plateau busters diet, I do NOT recommend you do it at this stage at all, your pouch is still to new and sensitive to go on something like this right now.  Please follow your doctors plan of mushie foods only.  I promise you are not failing, your body will let go of the lbs.

Ok. I did not measure myself before surgery, but my dr did. But my 2 week follow up they just looked at my stomach and said I was healing wonderfully, and that was it. They didn't seem bothered by the fact I am having a hard time holding anything down, or how much I did or did not lose. They did not measure me either.
I hope I continue to lose. I have just failed so many DIETS that I am so afraid of failing at this too. It is driving me crazy.

I am having a hard time with the protein because the shakes are so thick that most of the ones I try are making me really sick to my stomach and sometimes I dump. I have had a rough start with being able to tolerate things. I am still on mostly mush and liquids because I cannot tolerate much. With the mush foods I started today, I have been in the bathroom non stop. You would think I would drop some serious weight! LOL.

one thing that worked really well for me early out was to make half a protien shake with the full amount of water - so half a scoop to 6-8 oz water and then put 1-2 oz in either a shot glass or a dixie bathroom cup and I could sip down an oz every 15 mins or so and the thinner the easyer -

different peeps need dif temps - I ONLY did ice cold for the first several months - we were at Ft Bliss in the summer so that was NOT an easy thing but we got me a thermos and I carried it around

if your pouch is not ready for solids my PERSONAL advise from MY experance says then give it another day or two to heal - back off the mashed stuff - water down the protien shakes and aim for one oz ever 15 mins all day long

and then monday or tue try ONE food at the time - I have recently started dumping on potatoes again - sevearl of us do that so if you are lactose sensitive and dump on potatoes and are trying to eat cottage cheese and mashed pot you are going to spend a lot of time sick

how about VERY soft scrambed eggs - take one egg and half as much water (or milk if that is not an issue for you) mix very well cook till barely done and very soft - now feed the dog or disposal half to start with b/c left over eggs are nasty then sit down and with a baby spoon take tiny tiny bites aiming to take a full 10-15 mins to eat that half an egg - think feeding a newborn tummy here b/c your pouch is the size and MORE sensitive than a newborns - so chew chew chew each TINY TINY bite till it just is gone kwim?

I also did well with soups - homemade (my mom was there right after surg) with rice or pasta boiled till almost disolved and tiny shreds of meat and veggies

i know I and other folks who are YEARS out are known to have bad pouch days and go to shakes and water for 12-48 hours to let mr pouch get less pissy

hope this helps - sorry it got so long

The fear is understandable, but this time it's different you have a tool that you've never had before that will help you.  Hang in there and next time you see your doctor, get a copy of your measurements or measure tonight and go from here.

Also, the initial part of the surgery there is allot of trial and error, if you continue to have problems do not hesitate to call your surgeon and express  your concern.  Strictures is one of the early post-op problems, easy to fix.  It's very important to get in as much protein and water as you can right now.
