What could happen if you don't take your supplements ?

24 isn't ferritin or it wouldn't be considered low but in range.  It's probably current iron levels which run in the 30-145 range.

My TBIC (binding capacity) is low at 19 - range should be 20-50.  Ferritin for me is at 13.27, range of 13-150 and I'm supplementing most of the time; now faithfully.

Judy, what type of iron are they giving you?  Are you taking apart from calcium, dairy, grains, and caffiene?  Are you taking chewable vitamin C with it for better absorption?

Also on potassium, I've dealt with low potassium 3 times since my surgery and have to supplement daily with potassium.  Even with the dose I take I run on the low side of the range.  Please stay on top of potassium, low is life threatening.  You might talk to your doc about liquid potassium, it works better (taste disgusting though).

OJ?    WOW   My nut doesn't recommend for me to consume ANY fruit juices because of the sugar content.   She recommended for me to stay around 6grams per serving on any food.

I only do OJ  once in a GREAT BLUE MOON at breakfast at Golden Corral.........when I go there....and I drink less than 2 oz then.....cuz I'm usually spending more time on eating proteins......hehehehe...........

Do take your vits.......I haven't had any complications, yet.............but I do take a multivit and b-12 and thena b-12shot once a month................I'm a little low right now on vit D - but we are working on that -

Good luck with you !

  • Pease check out Dr. Connie Stapleton's Website. A lot of good information on there for all WLS patients regardless of the surgery you chose.  Good luck to all and I'm here for you if you want to send me an email.  I'll answer it as soon as possible.

Where's your calcium at Phyllis?  You don't mention calcium.  What was your lab number on it and did you have a PTH done also?

Please get those numbers if you did, they all sorta play into each other.

What Vitamin D are you taking, dry form I hope.

BTW, I just had my D25 hydroxy come in and mine dropped 22 points in a year and I supplement with allot of Vitamin D3.  When I attempt to lower it my bones hurt badly.  I'm actually thinking about adding more to my daily intake.

I am religious about taking my vitamins every single day.  No questions asked.  Even with that, my hemotologist checks my iron every other week and I have been getting iron fusions every other week as well for several months.  Yeah, it's a pain, but it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make if that's what it takes to keep my levels and my energy up.  I just don't understand how someone can take their health and their life so lightly that they think it's okay NOT to take their vitamins just because they feel okay.  We all had this surgery to be healthy and live a LONGER life.  Not taking your vitamins and checking your blood work can be a death sentence.  Doesn't do any good to be thin with no teeth or severe nerve damage or blind!

Follow the rules and you'll be fine!

Good luck!
Melissa
