I had surgery scheduled in Mexico and cancelled it due to Swine Flu. I was feeling good about using Dr. Kim in DFW. I heard from his office today that my BMI isn't high enough (34) to have RYN. He would consider doing the Sleeve. I was really wanting RNY. Any suggestions?

I know people who have had the sleeve and have been very successful with it.  Do you have any health problems like high BP or diabetes???  That might help you get RNY.  But I wouldn't shy away from the sleeve.  Talk with others have had it.

I would research the sleeve if I were you.  I think that it is ideal for lower bmi people.  Visit the sleeve forum and check it out.  An added bonus is that the sleeve is much less expensive than rny.

You may be a candidate for RYN surgery if you are an adult with:

  • A body mass index (BMI) of 40 or more (about 100 pounds overweight for men and 80 pounds for women) or a BMI between 35 and 39.9 and a serious obesity-related health problem such as type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, or severe sleep apnea (when breathing stops for short periods during sleep).
In my opinion: I would listen to your doctor.
My neighbor had the sleeve and is doing great and it was much cheaper.  She had it done in Las Vegas.

Hi.  My BMI was only 37 at the time of surgery.  However, I have high blood pressure and diabetes.  SOmetimes, if you have comorbidies, they will over look the BMI qualifier.

I just had surgery with Dr Dean Mcdaniels out of Victoria last Monday.  I fell fantastic and highly recommend him.

Good luck!

Ryssa.....the sleeve is still a very awesome surgery.   I know alot of very successful people who have had it done.   Some as long as 2 + yrs ago.   Have you seen Dr. Kim's TV Commercial????  The lady "Shelly" who holds up her hand and says she is getting married had the sleeve and she is one of Dr. Kim's nurses.    She has done a amazing job with her WL.  Look into the sleeve before you totally rule it out.    Dr. Kim does what he feels is best for you and your health.    Go in and talk to him about the sleeve before you go elsewhere.   I know you would be pleased with it if you got it.

Hugs and blessings ~~~ Vivian

I would check on the sleeve.  I love Dr. Kim and really value his wisdom.  There are alot of people that I have met (Dr. Kims patients) that are very happy with the sleeve.  You might look into it and think about it.  Schedule an appointment with him and at least talk to him........cant hurt.  Good luck to you

You may want to consider the Lap Band. I had it 4 yrs ago, and love it!
Your weight loss is a bit slower, but I had no problems with certain foods coming back up ect.
I have lost 116lbs, and 75 was the first year. Plus its done out patient, had surgery at 8:30 home from Dallas at 1:00. Only took off work 1 day.

Good Luck,
