BLOOD IN URINE !!! WHAT DOES IT MEAN?????

My son on friday night at his theatre banquet went to the restroom and urinated blood.    Then he got weak and all most passed out.   I took him to the ER but it was soooo crowded that we sat there for a while and he got to feeling better so we left.     I did take him to the dr. on sat. AM and they found traces of blood in urine and protein in the urine also.    They gave no answers though.   He is a senior in high school as you ....well most anyway already know and he is very busy and I am too preparing for graduating......family coming into town and all the stuff that goes with that.   He is going back to give blood to be tested this week ...but I thought that maybe you nurses out there could give me some ideas.   I did talk to the nurse at my docs office while ago and she said that he could have been very dehydrated.    Could this cause blood in the urine????    Thanks for any and all answers.    I am a little worried about him.   He stays so very busy at school and I see no slowing down till he graduates !!!!

BREATHE Mama!!!! He's probably a NORMAL teenager--I have a couple of those and never drinks enough WATER. He could have a simple UTI or have passed a small stone and irritated the urinary tract. I'm sure they will test him for Diabetes, but be sure to ASK, just in case. Mostly I bet he just has so much going on his life, it's taking a tol on his body. PLEASE keep us updated. These kiddos keep us hopping-don't they????

Gina....trust me when he said that he felt a little pain before he urinated....a UTI was the first thing that I thought off.   But the PA he saw on saturday said he saw NO UTI !!!   I have passed many kidney stones and it hurt like childbirth.    He was in NO pain just a little burning.     I can't figure out what is going on.    He drinks nothing bu****er No sodas....get that !!!  I think my giving up sodas affected him !!!  LOL   Anyway I hope that we have answers soon.   He is very active so there is a chance that he could have been dehydrated but would that cause blood in urine???   Thanks Gina....I was hoping you would answer.   I so value your opinion.

Vivian, sorry your son had this situation, I know it fightening him and you.  My first thought before reading Gina's response was 1) UTI or 2) Passed Kidney stone.

I'd have him go to your PCP for a urine test, it'll give you info on an infection.

Thanks Dana....I am going to do my best to make him go to have blood drawn in the AM.    He is so very busy these days....next week they go perform in theatre at Casa Mania for a Betty Buckley award.    Hope nothing like this happens again.

The only halfway helpful thing I can say is that the protein isn't a symptom in itself. Your blood has protein and since there was blood there there is protein still there...

Learned that from my SIL when she was fighting breast cancer. She collapsed a lung and they had to do a chest tube to reinflate it. It collapsed again and they tested some fluid from her lung and the fluid had protein in it. The tech told her she had bone cancer and that she was going to die!! Her oncologist heard about this and ran over to tell her that the protein they found was from the blood from the first chest tube and she most certianly did NOT have bone cancer but ran all of the tests for her piece of mind.

Moral of the story is while the protein MAY mean something bad, it also MAY NOT!!

Prayers and keep us posted!

Vivian,

You can buy an OTC test that will tell you if it is a UTI or not. I get mine at CVS or Walgreens. Also, if he is in pain (sometimes the burning is intense) you can buy some pills in the same area as the test strips that will alleviate the burning/pain. HOWEVER do the test first since the pills make the urine DARK yellow almost orange and it makes it hard to read the test strips.

They did a UTI test at the doctors office saturday AM and it came back negative.    I have no clue.   The doctor's nurse this AM that I spoke with ( she wasn't there sat. AM ) said it could all be due to dehydration.   To me that doesn't make sense.   That is why I posted the quesion.    We are hopefully going to get bloodwork done tomorrow then go from there.....if nothing turns up...maybe he was severely dehydrated.    But he drinks water ALL the time so that is really hard for me to believe.   But I guess it could happen.   Thanks for the information.....who knows I may need that info one day in the future....I had no idea you could buy those things over the counter.
Thanks Andrea.

I would bring him back to the Do****il you get answers!! Hematuria should never be ignored it could be internal bleeding or stones but it's best to find out for sure, but there is almost always something underlying with blood in urine or anywhere for that matter.
