Ok, so I am 10 days post op. The first 7 days I could not tolerate ANYTHING except crstal ligt (watered down) and I lost 2lbs a day for a total of 14lbs. The last 3 days I have been able to have watered down soup, and a sf jello, and cream of wheat (1/3 of a package). However, in the last 3 days since I had more substanance, I have not lost anything. How is that possible? I know it is bad to watch the scale but I am kind of frustrated that I cannot tolerate anything and now I am not losing either. I feel like surgery failed. I am just frustrated. Is this normal? Also, is it normal to want to eat? I am not hungry, but I feel like I should be eating. I make meals for the kids and I want to grab a bite because I feel like I SHOULD be eating, this liquid stuff for 12 days now is crazy (10 days post op and 2 days preop). So I feel like I should be eatting something and I want to eat and I am still not hungry. Ok, so , am I crazy? Is my body a freak of nature? LOL.

I am so glad to hear I am not the only one! LOL. I thought this was going to toally change things. Of course, I cannot eat the things I want, but I kept hearing about people that have been 6 months or a year post op and never hungry. Shoot- I was hoping for that. I feel like I am going to be a failure!! How can I lose weight if I am wanting to eat? Uggh. Did you lose any weight yet?

I am concerned about your inability of tolerate more foods/liquids.  Have you called the doctor?  I was released to eat anything I wanted at 2 weeks post bypass.  I certainly was tolerating all soft mushy things by then.  Are you getting in any protein?  How much water are you getting down a day?  Is your pee yellow or dark in color?  I'm worried about dehydration vs a stricture for you.  If you aren't taking in enough food/liquids you could be in starvation mode but it's pretty soon out for that.  Keep track of how many ounces of liquids you're getting in and let us know or call your doctor if you aren't getting what you're supposed to.

I totally believe I am dehydrated. I get headaches and my pee is bright yellow orange. I have been in touch with the doctors DAILY and all they do is tell me different foods to try and nothing ever works. They said I am just "sensitive" to the surgery, a one in a million fluke... but I am slowly sipping my water/crystal light, I get about 24oz a day, give or take. I am drinking about 3/4 bottles a day. But I have to sip slow or I get d/s. I just had some soup and I was able to tolerate a little, but it was all of about 2 spoonfulls. This morning was 1/3 of a package of cream of wheat. Yesterday it was 1/3 of cream of wheat for breakfast, lunch was about 3/4 spoonfulls of watered down chicken soup, and the same for dinner. That is the most I have had since surgery.

Thanks for the info.  Sounds to me like you are definately NOT getting enough food in you.  I would insist that the doctor sees you.  I would write down what you've eaten in the last 24 hours and take it with you.  Make them do a urine test to check for dehydration.  It sounds like you have a stricture to me.  Do you vomit if you try to eat more than a couple of spoonfuls?  I went back and looked at my profile to see where I was at 2 weeks post-op and posted my entry below so you can compare.

Here's my 2 week post-op blog:I'm 2 weeks post-op today and very frustrated.  I haven't lost any weight in 5 days.  I am down a total of 17 lbs but NONE in 5 days????  What's up with that??  I have begun to get a little hungry, esp in the evenings.  I am on soft mushy foods now.  I have been eating mashed potatoes with cheese, soup, applesauce, watermelon, pears, fudgesicles and yesterday I had some crab salad pureed in my magic bullet.  It was great!!  I'm eating 2-4 oz at a time.

I still don't have a lot of energy.  I'm only walking around my backyard pool about 3-4 times at once.  It's 100+ degrees outside so I haven't even tried to walk the neighborhood.

I'm doing OK on my water but I'm only drinking 1-2 protein drinks a day.  I know I need to do better.  I think it's time to hide the scales...

Good luck, let me know if I can help in any way and keep me posted.

I do not vomit, but I get the WORST stomach ache  to the point where it is rumbling and turning and I am doubled over in pain and I can litterally SEE my stomach turning and hear it rumbling! I get the sweats, I get sooo neasueas I sit hugging the toilet, but nothing ever happens. I also get very bad chest pains, but I think it might be gas. I get gas from everything I eat or drink!! If I take a SIP of my crystal light, and then I lay funny, or sit , or lean forward, I burp or get gas. I burp and get gas from anything and everything and I never had that before in my life. I have been in touch with Jerry, my nutrionist, for a week. They just tell me new foods to keep trying. First it was Almond milk, then it was soup, then it was cream of wheat, everyday it is something new. That is all they do. I am soooo glad you didn't lose for 5 days because I am really worried. I am trying to keep with the fluids but when you are feeling sick, or you get sick from it, you really find it hard to take in that much. 64oz is a LOT to me. Right now I have bad heartburn from just the few sips I just took , and they were slow and very tiny little sips. I have not even had protien shakes yet, I cannot tolerate them. Not even the watered down Almond milk, or the scrambeled eggs, watered down soup is hard to take in too.

First off, I really don't recommend weighing yourself every day. There are so many up and down slight variations from day to day that personally I find weighing daily early out to bring much more frustration.

Dr. Marquez was my surgeon as well, but I'm RNY. I'm not familiar at all with your procedure, but get Jerry on the phone tomorrow and tell him what you're experiencing. You need to get more fluids in. 24 oz. in a day is too low for anyone let alone a post-op in this heat. And once you increase your fluids, you will likely see a little weight gain as you are dehydrated right now.

I had a horrible time finding foods I could tolerate once I came off of clear liquids. I spent most of days 17-27 staring into the bottom of the toilet. Keep your eye and thoughts on the long term goal. I promise once you get past it, you'll look back and realize it was a transition period and worth it in the log run.

Even at 3.5 years out, I still rarely experience hunger. But, I don't cook and I don't have children, so I'm not responsible for anyone's feeding except my own (and honestly, I'm barely responsible for that...my husband usually makes sure I'm fed). I can't speak to the wanting to eat you're experiencing. Maybe one of the moms will pipe in with her experience.
Blessings, Jennifer

Don't allow the scale to cause you any unnecessary frustrations.  Right now it's more important to focus on protein, water, walking and resting than anything else.  The weight WILL come off I promise; follow your plan (doc and nut prescribed) and realize the importance of doing what is necessary.

You'll experience slow downs and stalls, it's the nature of rapid weight loss, surgery and your body being in starvation mode holding on to the weight for energy.

Hang in there, breathe and come to the boards for support it's very important right now.

After reading some of the other responses I must add I definitely believe you are experiencing some degree of dehydration.  You MUST try your very best to sip all day long if necessary or you will end up in the ER on IVs for hydration.

It definitely sounds like you have a very sensitive pouch, that isn't totally uncommon.  None us know how thing will react immediately out of surgery, some folks have no problems (like me, with nausea only no vomiting) and others can barely eat anything.  It takes time for each of us to get through the various stages.  Are you allowed protien shakes?  I am most concerned about your water intake and the tiny bit of protein you are getting in right now,  I strongly suggest you discuss protein shakes with your surgeon and consider getting them in.  Know that lack of protein will make you super tired and your body will be leaching muscle to function.  Your organs are "muscles", think heart you don't want your heart to be compromised because your body is trying to survive due to lack of protein.
