I think this was lost in another post....

I do not actually mean to post a reply, but couldnt find out how to simply post.
I know you guys probably get tired of explaining what to expect to people and if you regret your decisions but I wasn't sure where else to get straight, honest answers.

I will tell you a little about myself and please feel free to respond openly and honestly, even if it's harsh, I want to hear it all.

I am a "bandster". I had Lap-Band 2 years ago and have lost 70 lbs. I lost probably 55 in the first year then only 15 or so in the last year. Which is very discouraging considering how many things I just can NOT eat. I am not 100% happy with the results and found out recently i have a leak and need a revision. I am considering the bypass and I get all excited ,then I get scared to death. I have read some of the complications and the success's and just want to know what to expect. Is it worth it? How painful is it? I have a friend who knows someone who's " staples popped 4 years after the surgery and he died". Can this really happen?

I have a million questions and love to read any and all information. Any help is greatly appreciated. You guys just do not know how much.

Thanks in advance.

You know...... I lost count after 7 or 8 people who, after finding out I was having RNY surgery, told me a story of someone who failed with the surgery.

When I pressed for details..... did they have lapband or gastric bypass?  how long ago?  what kind of follow-up/support did they have?  Nobody could answer those questions because they were just enjoying telling their story of someone who failed and it was always second-hand.

YES, things can go wrong with your surgery.  YES, you can gain weight back if you don't follow the rules.  You HAVE to take your vitamins for life.

Has it been worth it to me?  ABSOLUTELY !!!!!!

I had gastric bypass June 07 I researched it for 2 years.Have not had any major problems. I've lost 100lbs and feel better than I have in years. My brother had gastric bypass July 08 and passed away due to complications. I say this not to encourage or discourage you. My advice is to do your homework and only consider Dr's that have an excellent track record. Weigh the pros and cons. and remember any kind of surgery has it's risks.

Kind regards,

Lynnette

My lapband was the biggest mistake of my life.  I vomited daily for over 2 years and never lost any weight.  I had a revision to a bypass and reached goal 18 months later.  I couldn't be happier.  Like Lynnette said, pick the MOST EXPERIENCED surgeon you can find.  My lapband doc was brand new, my bypass doc had a ton of experience.  Please feel free to read my profile for details of my experience.  (I'm not bashing lapbands, MINE was just a nightmare).

My mother lives in NY.  When I told her I was having RNY she bashed it completely.  She asked me if I remembered Judy, that is how she died.  Judy died in 1990 or so.  I do believe there have been improvements Mom.  But she wouldn't listen.  I had my RNY and am very happy with the results.  The only thing I really miss is soft serve ice cream.
