pre program stuff in her favorites for her lol. No subscription needed, but YOU or Chris will have to update the software every so often so she has the latest maps and such. They come with a cable, its easy. Plug and play kinda thing. I update mine and mom's and God knows she' cant do it lol.

Biggest thing to think of is what features you want the device to have. Such as
Square or Wide Screen
Spoken Street names (a must I have to say)
Built in traffic (Alissa's has this but not too impressed with it yet)
After driving with her parents and then getting Alissa's Garmin have the street name spoken (such as in .4 miles turn right on to Davis Blvd) means the driver can keep their eyes on the road. Yes it is a few dollars more but I think you can now get them with spoken street names around 175

After we spent about an hour wandering around downtown Houston after our son's wedding, they bought us a Tom-Tom for Christmas. I love it! You do have to plug it into the computer and update the maps every few months, but otherwise no subscription is needed. It did take me a while to learn how to follow the directions. But it's never led me astray. It gives me confidence that I can go anywhere without getting lost. We named ours "Tommie Sue."
