Nut: Protein Intake/Carbs and more....

I started seeing a registered dietician, licensed nutritionist and a certified strength and conditioning specialist.... I've seen her three weeks now. She also provides:

SERVICES
  • Individual Nutrition Sessions, in-person or over-the-phone:

  • Gastric Bypass/Banding
  • Athletes o Healthy Living
  • Group Sessions
  • Presentations
  • Seminars/Weekend Trainings FORMS

However, here is MY question... I see so many people eating 130+ protein in both protein drinks/supplements plus real food. She wants me to ONLY get in 100grams of protein and NO MORE than that, plus eat 50% of my caloric intake in CARBS.

I've started doing this and with HESITATION.... I know that up to this point I've been undereating... and that my body had been in starvation mode with everything that I was eating.

This to me seems so unreal... I'm about to eat 2 years in 2 months and seem to be struggling now more than ever the past few months. I've increased my exercise and eating what my nutritionist wants-- and the scale did move UP 7lbs... Something is NOT right... But, I wasn't losing either...

Any suggestions?

50% of calories from carbs scares me. I eat far more carbs than most post-ops and I don't eat anywhere near that. I'm not sure if CajunGirl will be around because it's the weekend, but she's a great resource and I'd love to see what she has to say.

When I was trying to lose, every time I stalled, I upped my protein by 10-15g/day and within a few days, the stall would break. I lost most efficiently when I was eating 95-110g protein/day. To maintain, I still shoot for 70g of protein.

I also try to listen to what my body wants and let it guide me. If I'm craving protein, I eat protein. If I'm craving carbs, I eat carbs. Right now, I'm unemployed, so I'm working out every day and this week, I've been eating everything because my body needs more fuel that it has in a long time. I used to freak out when I'd have the hungrier days, but at 3.5 years out and maintaining for over 2, I just eat. If I see the scale start to creep up, I rein things in, but for the most part, I just try to feed my body what it wants.

I had a check up with my doctor recently.  I've been at goal since January 4.  We went over my food log and he told me I wasn't eating enough.  He gave me guideines to go by.  I trusted him and followed it for 2 weeks and gained 6 pounds.  I'm back on MY plan - I track calories first, and then protein...everything else falls where it may.  I've lost the weight I gained and now am maintaining again. 

I think that the professionals have general guidelines.  And they work for most people, but every now and there are people who the generalities don't fit into.  I think I am one of those abnormal people.  Maybe you are, too.

Have you had your BMR tested?  It is a medical test where they can tell you what your Basal Metabolic Rate is.  Takes the guessing out of the game and you'll know exactly what you NEED to eat.  Then you only have to tack on additional intake for the activity level. 

Most RDs can do the test.  If yours doesn't try a large gym.  They sometimes have one on staff who offers the service.

My BMR is 1682. I also workout 3-4x a week with my trainer, plus I do cardio everyday except maybe one rest day that I'm TRYING to work in. I do cardio ON TOP of the 3-4x I work out with my trainer- we workout in the morning and than I work out cardio at night.

I wasn't LOSING anything and they said that my body was in starvation because I was only getting in 1200-1400 calories on average per day before I started seeing my nutritionist. She actually has me NOT logging anything, and not counting ANYTHING, and not looking at numbers, etc.... Just eating on a "time"...

I don't know what to do... It just seems like NO ONE really knows anything.

You are a puzzle!  No doubt you're upset and frustrated.  I know I would be. 

Any chance you can come to the support group meeting in Mansfield this Sunday.  I'd love a chance to sit down and visit with you more.  And JennD will be here.  She is one of the ladies who ran the half marathon.  She's had to play with her intake quite a bit, but she found the right balance.  Maybe someone will think of something else, too. 

We'd sure love to have you.  And it might be nice for you to meet some folks from the boards, too.  Let me know if you need the address.

Thanks... What time is the support group? And, yes please send me the address. I would love to come if I am able to! I do need some more help from me.... I have a therapist, nutritionist, my doctors and my trainer.... I was talking with my trainer this morning and he was going to send me some information on this other meal plan- he said that he considers me an athelete not just a "normal" person. He said that it sounded weird that 50% of my caloric intake should be CARBS. In fact, we were discussing some other of the things that my nutritionist wanted me to do, instead of eating a protein bar try a snickers. Be "normal"... I am really frustrated, drained mentally and emotionally!

I'm sorry but I have to chime in on this!! She asked you to eat a Snicker instead of a protein bar?!?! That is stunning!! Protein bars(well most are) nutritionally sound and a Snickers bar is sugar, sugar and more sugar. That is why they are so good--they are junk!! Personally I am appalled!!

Meggie....

She wants me to be "normal". I am not obessed anymore and I although I am still not at the GOAL weight I want, it's not that important, health is. I was told not to worry about getting in "sugar" that at this point if I didn't dump in the beginning I will not now.  Although, at the beginning I never tested the "dumping". I have to log everything I eat and I had made some really GOOD nachos. Triscuits and cheese, I loved them. I was told that I was torturing my body. Instead eat the REAL chips. I was told to eat a hamburger, and fast food. That normal people do this. And, I can not be on a diet or restriction the rest of my life. That I need to be "normal". I can eat cheese fries, candy, cake, etc.... That BIOLOGICALLY the surgery does not stop of us from being normal.  I was told NOT to eat broccoli and salads anymore because that was EMPTY calories for me...  I was told to eat WHITE carbs not just whole grains. I was also told that I should not eat just plain tuna fish (which I LOVE the taste), but to add some mayo, or other condiments to it.

I am just like I don't know what to do... Somethings got to give somewhere! But, who do I listen to the EXPERTS? Members, myself, or who...?

I will admit that I have suffered with an eating disorder and she was fearing that I had characteristics of aneroxia. And, whats me to have a "normal" relationship with food. What is normal? Apparently, "normal" for me isn't for her and so on.

I am sorry I just don't understand this woman's thinking! To me is screams sabotage. Why can't having a protein bar instead of a snickers be "normal".  Would she tell a diabetic to eat a snickers since it is a "normal" snack? As far as carbs go, the whole grains are much better for you so why not eat them and make it your "normal"? If you love plain tuna, why change it? Alittle mayo or condiments are fine but why change it if it is not broke. Broccoli is not only nutritious but has fiber unlike lettuce which is mostly water!
It seems to me she is promoting "normal" eating instead of healthy eating! Her "normal" is a lot of what got us into trouble in the first place! Again why can't your "normal" be the healthy decisions you are making? I would talk to your bariatric surgeon or your pcp about what she is telling you(whichever one referred you to her).She may be only looking your eating disorder and not looking at your baruatric surgery. I can see why you are confused!
