Topic: RE: Depressed -- Anti-depressants?
Hey, Kelly! I was on antidepressants for about 15 years prior to my surgery - a long history of depression and anxiety. I tried opening my capsules and taking the powder form with applesauce after surgery, but couldn't tolerate the taste! Then I tried the liquid form of it, and couldn't tolerate that either. So I was a BAD patient and just stopped taking them altogether. That was a terrible idea, as my depression just started coming back with a vengeance. So once I could swallow pills again, I started taking my antidepressants again, and have felt like myself ever since. Now I am 10 months out, and feeling SO much better - I am thinking about talking to my doc about taking a smaller dose, but only with my doc's advise and supervision. Good luck to you!!

Thank you!  I haven't started smoking but it does creep into my mind.  I appreciate your response.  I'll ask the doctor tomorrow.  Take care.

I took Zoloft before and resumed it immediately post op. I have had no problems with it.

Hormones are stored in fat,so as we bagan to lose those hormones in our blood stream makes us whacky.

It wouldn't hurt for you to start them again,at least until you get further along in your recovery.

Can't help you with the smoking, but I would have to say try your best not to pick it back up.

Good luck,
holly

Topic: Depressed -- Anti-depressants?

I am almost 4 weeks post op for RNY -- and, I have to say, I am a bit depressed.  I feel like I have no outlet and with all the snow and recovering from surgery, really feel house bound.  I stopped taking anti depressants before my surgery and was fine but now I am thinking I should go back on them.  Also, I quit smoking prior to my surgery and I am having a very hard time with not wanting to go back -- just for the sin factor of doing something that calms me.

Is there anyone out there that takes anti depressants before and after surgery?  Were there any issues?

Hello, fellow Dr. B patient!

Whoo hoo on getting your date and inching towards it. He wasn't requiring a pre-op at the time I had mine (of course that was 2.5 yrs ago) but honestly, you will be in the best of hands. He is a well-respected physician in this area (even as a general surgeon before he went into bariatrics) and also performed my gallbladder removal at 9 mos out and an exploratory and hernia repair at 15 mos out.

The whole group there is great and I'm so excited for you!

Tell him Leslie says hi!

Be happy.

Good luck Guys! It may get old or boring on the liquid stage, but you will get thru it. Before you know it, you will look back and a whole bunch of fat will be gone.....forever! Sherry

HiJack:
Mine is the day before so I'll be walking the halls at the same time...see you after surgery! Were you at the diet class on Dec 29? My BMI is so borderline, he told me not to lose an ounce between now and the 24th.

Good luck on your diet.
