I was wondering what type of protein is best both pre and post op? I want to buy the Whey protein isolate but my husband says that normally bodybuilders use that type of protein. My nutritionist gave me some samples and they do have isolate in them but unsure of the amounts. What do you think? Open to any ideas and suggestions

Welcome to the Tennessee board Foxy. I use Designer Whey protein powder and also Revival Soy protein powder. I have heard from others on these boards that we absorb the whey protein better than the soy protein. My nut has never said one was better than the other and she recommends both so I just go with what I like. The main things you want to look for are low carb & sugar content and watch the calorie count and you want to find the brand(s) that fit your taste. If you don't like the taste of your protein supplement it will be hard for you to drink it like you should. The 2 brands I use are each about 90 to 130 calories and 2 - 8 grams of carb per scoop. The whey protein is lower in calories & carbs than the soy. I buy my whey protein at The Vitamin Shoppe but GNC also carries this brand. The Revival brand products all have to be ordered online. You might also check out www.bariatriceating.com and order some samples. Good luck.

I checked with bariatriceating.com and they aren't doing the samples at this time. I don't use any protein. I am in normal ranges, just from my foods. I eat a lot of cottage cheese, mild cheddar cheese, greens, I can handle some nuts like cashews and peanuts and they are high in protein. Chip dip like French onion, ranch dip is high in proteins, so I dip veggies in them. Remember I am dealing with chemo pills so drinking protein shakes and powders don't settle with my stomach. There is one at Rite-Aid for $10.99. It's an unflavored protein powder and one scoop is 22 grams. I used it when I was on liquids in my broth, hot tea, and things like that. You want to average 80-100 grams a day. Best of luck. Kathy

Kathy, I don't know where you checked on bariatriceating.com for samples but they most certainly are still doing samples. The samples aren't free and never have been but they are certainly still available. I ordered both of the Protein Tasters packs to get a wider assortment of samples and so I would have a shaker cup for home and one to keep at the office. For getting your protein in immediately post-op, you will need to use some kind of protein supplement. That's also a good time to try the samples because you will then be able to get a good idea of what you like and don't like. Some of the proteins others love I thought were nasty. That's why there are so many, everyone has their own tastes.

I just ordered the sample pack, I thought it was kinda pricey but it does come with a shaker cup, and I know i'm gonna need one of those. I heard that your tastes change somewhat after surgery, so I'm gonna start trying all of my samples when I'm post op!!! Jacqueine
