I agree, the Edge protein shakes are NASTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I use Designer Whey, you can get this at GNC. I buy mine at The Vitamin Shoppe because they are nicer than the people at GNC. I also order Revival Soy online. I like both of these and they come in a wide variety of flavors so you don't get burned out on one flavor. I also ordered some sample packs from bariatriceating.com. I didn't really care for most of them. Some were okay but I wouldn't want them everyday. Others on this board swear by the Nectar protein though. I would recommend ordering the sample packs to see if any of these will work for you. Just remember, your tastes may change after surgery and what you like pre-op may not taste good to you post-op. That's where the samples are really good. If you find you don't like something, you aren't stuck with a big jug of it. As for the stuff you got at GNC, I believe you can take that back for a refund since you don't like it. If you would want to send me a private email with a mailing address I'd be happy to send you some samples of the protein powders I have. I'll even cover postage. Susan

Hi, You may like them later after surgery, but if you don't, just get as many samples as you can to try. I use Choc or Van "body Fortress" whey protein from Wal-mart myself with no problem. I have even gotten to where I can drink them easily mixed with water..100 calories. Even if you can't find one you like, that doesn't mean you'll fail, lots of people never use them at all. Don't let the salespersons rudeness upset you. You'll do fine even if you never drink the shakes. Put the powder in sugar free pudding for some extra protein....hang tuff, you'll make it. Billie

Hi Penny, I don't use any of the protein shakes, or powders. I have bought them and after two swollows I want to gag. I get my protein from my foods. Like eggs, cottage cheese, cheddar cheese, fish, white meat chicken, you can even mix a tablespoon of the cheese cake mix and blend it with the cottage cheese for a custard and all these are high in protein. I do have an unflavor kind from Rite-aid for $10.99, one scoop is 22 grams, to add to soups, or a cup of hot tea. But last weeks blood work showed my protein levels are in the middle range. I have tried the Slim Fast Optima and Boost High Protein and there they sit, as I can't drink them. I used to love flavored water, can't stand it now. I love lemonade (also keeps kidney stones from forming) and now I shutter at drinking any. Also chip dip like Ranch or French onion are high in proteins, you have to find something that works for you. Some have had great luck with the shakes, others like me can't stand them. I wish you the best of luck. Personnally I wouldn't worry about buying them right now, as you may find you won't like them after surgery. Plus the first 2 weeks or so you will be on liquids. With soups like chicken noodle broth, or vegatable soup without the veggies in it, you can still get some protein. Same with sf Jello, juices some carry proteins. Be sure to buy sugar free. Popsickles can be bought at Wal-marts in sugar free. That's water supplement. I will be 4 months out on Tuesday, so if you need anything just let me know or email me. I'll help in anyway I can. May God travel with you on this journey. Kathy

Protein shakes do tend to be nasty, I agree. It took me a long time to find one I could tolerate because I also have a whey sensitivity/allergy. The only ones I could find locally that did not make me sick were the EAS Advantage in the Cafe Caramel flavor. They're rather expensive at like 4 for $6, and only 15 grams of protein each, but tolerable with a decent taste. I finally went online to bariatriceating.com and ordered a boatload of samples and found a protein that is delicious -- the IsoFruit Delite in cantaloupe flavor. I buy it direct from the manufacturer and get free shipping and a 20% discount -- that means I pay about $36 for a month's supply, not a bad deal. You may try going to bariatriceating.com and ordering samples of the different offerings. Wait until post-op to open them though, as your tastes may change dramatically. When you find a protein that you like, definitely call the manufacturer and see if you can get it cheaper through them -- most companies will do stuff like that if you just ask. By the by -- if you do try the IsoFruit Delite or the Protein Delite from bariatriceating.com and like it -- call the manufacturer (1-888-scitec7) and talk to Alina (ext 109) and let her know you heard about them through Obesity Help and she will give you the same deal she gives me just one of the perks of calling and asking, ya know...

I agree with the samples!!!! You can look at two different websites www.enjoyhealth.com or www.bariatriceating.com and find their protein samples. I haven't had surgery yet but I am trying lots of different ones first to see what I like and what I simply can't stand. Some of the ones that I like are the ones from Nectar - they aren't chocolate, vanilla, strawberry (too many Optifast diets have "cured" me of those tastes). Also here's another little trick - once you make them (and I do them in a special little blender) pour a little of it out in a tiny party cup like the ones that you have if you were having punch at a shower. That way you don't have to smell them all the time - GROSS!!! For me - more than anything - the smell is what is so horrible. Good luck to you! Mara

Penny, Don't get too discouraged. First of all, does your surgeon REQUIRE that you drink protein shakes? Mine does not, I did have to drink NSA Carnation Instant Breakfast for the first four weeks post-op and for a protein drink, it's not bad. However, post-op when you are in ketosis, you will find that things taste differently for a while. Also, the pre-mixed protein drinks are much worse than the ones you mix up yourself, IMO. I use a milk and egg protein powder that I buy at Kroger, it can be mixed into yogurt or made into a shake or smoothie. I usually make smoothies and since I'm over a year out, I add frozen fruit to the milk and protein powder so I can get in some of my fruit and veggie requirements too. Secondly, as far as the rude comment from the sales clerk, don't let that get you down, it just shows that she is uneducated and insensitive. You are doing what needs to be done to improve your health and quality of life! Good luck!!

I found Unjury Protein on the OH site. It is pretty good. I found that if I make up the chocolate and freeze it an ice tray, I can take it out and put it into zip locks until time to enjoy. It actually tastes like a fudgesicle! 7 grams of protein per ice cube It is suppose to be on the Vandy store page. I haven't found that page yet. If anyone knows where it is located, I'd appreciate it.

Suzzie Glover, If you find that page let me know okay. I am always looking for more things to eat when I have my surgery that will help me. Thank you for the advice about the unjury protein and chocolate and freeze them. Sounds good. Your friend, Tina
