I had my first post-op visit to my favorite sushi place today. I had to take some stuff to my daughter downtown so we stepped down the street to a little hole in the wall called "Sam's Sushi". We affectionately refer to him as "the sushi nazi" after Seinfield's "soup nazi". I told him I just wanted a small order of sashimi ($12) and some seaweed salad. He told me the sashimi is too expensive and I wouldn't get enough to eat. I told him he doesn't know how much I eat and that it would be plenty. My daughter then told him I could not have the rice. He told me to order the $4.95 lunch special and he would leave the rice out. How nice was that?! He made my Nashville roll with seaweed wrap, cucumber, avacado, lobster & shrimp and put the salmon & tuna from my nigiri in it too. I got my seaweed salad, steamed squid, orange slices & wasabi and I was a happy camper. I had been craving this stuff for weeks!!!!! I had him package about 90% of it for me to take home and got a lecture about not eating it after it has sat in the refrigerator for more than 5 hours. He also quizzed me about why I don't eat rice. Do I eat bread? Am I trying to lose weight? What do I eat? I didn't tell him about my surgery because there were other customers at the time. I will be going back again and I'll talk to him then. He won't understand but I know he will remember that I can't have the rice. He really is a sweet man, he's just very outspoken.

Hi Susan, I have a card from the hospital about my surgery. I tell everyone about it, that I can only eat as much as a toddler, most of the time when I am with someone, they don't charge me as the person will get what I want on his plate, and they just give me a small plate for the 2-3 bites that I can eat. Everytime I see someone struggling because of their weight, I tell them I had this surgery and what a major difference I have found by losing the weight. The two that were in the Ambulance last night were major over weight. The driver (19) was so big he had a hard time just trying to get up into the back of the ambulance. I talk about it to everyone, I have decided to be a spokesperson for the weightlos surgery so that others can get the help they need. I never heard of it until 3 years ago. How many others are out there that don't know about it? Dr.'s don't advertise it because then they don't get paid when you don't have to see them as much. Love ya, enjoy your weekend. Kathy

Yeah, I have a card too. I have not needed to use it as most restaurants will allow me to order from the kid's menu even without the card. That is, when you can find a kid's menu that is fit for us to eat post-op. Other times we just ask for an extra plate and I share with whoever I'm eating with. The sushi place was different in that my daughter got her roll & nigiri with rice. I could have shared her plate except it is considered very bad manners to just eat the fish and leave the rice in a sushi restaurant. I thought it was very nice of the chef to even offer to make my plate without rice.
