QUESTION ABOUT DUMPING FROM PEOPLE POST SURGERY OVER 1 YEAR
I HAD GASTRIC BYPASS SURGERY LAST YEAR AND LOST 130 POUNDS IN 11 MONTHS.I HAVE DONE WONDERFULLY AND WOULD DO IT AGAIN IN A HEARTBEAT.
MY QUESTION IS- I DUMP REALLY BAD ON ANYTHING WITH MUCH FAT OR SUGAR-ALSO HAVE PROBLEMS WITH LOW BLOOD SUGAR IF I EAT TOO MANY CARBS.
DO THESE PROBLEMS CONTINUE,OR DOES YOUR BODY ADAPT?
THANKS,
ROSA
Hi Rosa, from what all I've learned, read, and heard, this tool is for life. That means no carbs, sugar, or fats. These got you into trouble, that's why you had surgery, why would you want to go back to them? The whole idea of having surgery to to learn to eat healthier and live healthier. You will have to find your level of what you can eat and not eat. That's great about the lost weight, remember that when you are eating something you shouldn't have. Have a good day tomorrow. Always, kathy
Rosa,
First of all -- great job!! To answer your question, well....yes and no -- if you continue to try to eat foods high in fat and/or sugar, your body may actually adapt, you could go from dumping to just mild discomfort to being able to handle it. While we have a great tool, and many people count themselves as very lucky to have dumping, just like any tool, it is only as good as we allow it to be.
While I understand your desire to eat some of the old foods that you enjoyed pre-op, I feel compelled to ask if you got to the point of needing surgery because of eating foods that were high in sugar/fats and not so much healthy?
Of course, if you only try the occasional high-fat/high-sugar food, then the answer would be 'yeh, you will probably continue to dump forever'. Ask yourself what is better -- being able to eat a lot of fat and/or sugar without feeling ill (and possibly regaining some or all of your lost weight)or being able to honestly say "no thank you, it will make me ill if I eat that" and keeping yourself from regaining.
I hope this helps with your question, and you understand that while I am by no means a 'food-nazi' my opinion is to count yourself lucky for having the full toolset (WLS with the dumping) -- there are far too many people who do not dump and wish they did.
