Hi everyone, I was wondering if any of you have a two-story home. If so, how soon were you able to get upstairs? My bedroom is on on the second floor, and I didn't know if I would be able to climb the stairs after surgery. Also, what type of chair were you most comfortable in. A lady I work with said she lived in her recliner. I'm just afraid mine may be to deep for me to get in and out of. Thanks for the help, Beth

For the first 2-3 weeks you may find you will also sleep in a recliner. That way you are tossing about or rolling over onto your stomach or tearing the stitches out. I sleep in Mom's when I go up to WVa, I can't sleep flat, nor can I climb the stairs to the bedrooms, my wheelchair isn't made for stairs. Several have said they slept in the recliners as that was the only way they could get comfortable without hurting themselves in their own bed. Best of luck, Kathy

I didn't have any problem with stairs after surgery. I live in a second floor appartment and whet up and down slowly but no problems. I did try the recliner but wasn't comfortable at all. I spent some time at my Mom's when I first came home and she has an adjustable bed, I wasn't that comfortable but I think it was because I was too stuborn to use pain meds once I got home. I wasn't in pain, just uncomfortable, I think all part of the healing process. After about a week, I went back to my flat bed with no difficulty at all. Everyone is different and I can't say that you won't have problems with stairs but be prepared to be uncomfortable for a little while at first. Toni Lap RNY 3/21/05 267/171/130ish

Hi Beth, I live in a 2 story home and I didn't have any problems going up and down stairs. I had Lap RNY. If you have open and you find it difficult to climb stairs, try going up backwards. You don't use your abdominal muscles much that way. I had a c-section with my daughter and I lived on the 3rd floor of an apartment building and going up backwards made it so much easier. As far as sleeping. I slept in the bed surrounded by lots of pillows in a sitting position. Lying down was very uncomfortable for me. I don't own a recliner so my choices were bed, couch, loveseat, or chaise. The chaise was very comfortable but bad location in the house . Best wishes. Lisa
