PRE-OP DIET/surgery countdown

Hi friends. Was wondering if anyone else had trouble sticking to their pre-op diet given by their surgeon prior to surgery? My surgery is in a few weeks and I have been having "on-again/off-again" days with this diet. It can be frustrating...obviously if I could stick to a diet, I wouldn't be having surgery. I have gotten my water in everyday and given up sodas (which was no big deal for me)...but I haven't quite been as rigid with my carbohydrates. Some surgeons don't require a pre-op diet at all. I was just wondering if anyone else struggled with this before surgery diet? Thanks, Joe P.

I did struggle with the pre-op diet as well. Especially that last week before surgery, it was like I was treating every meal as my last real meal. But once you get to the post op stage where you can eat solid foods again, you realize how silly that mentality is. Just do the best you can and make sure the last couple of days you get mainly protein as that will help with the healing process. Good luck Toni Lap RNY 3/21/05 267/192

Toni, thanks so much for your reply. YES, I am reading that more and more had trouble sticking with the pre-op diet...then BOOM...like magic, after surgery...it all changes. You have to make yourself eat. I was doing fine until a few days ago, and like you, I kind of got into that "last supper" mentality. That is crazy because as we all know, in due time, we will be able to eat a lot of our favorite foods, just in a lot smaller portions. Anyway, I am glad I wasn't the only one who wasn't feeling successful with this pre-op diet. I say "c'mon surgery...I am ready to rock and roll!" thanks again, JOE P.
